Anyone that lives in Illinois and has Ameren knows that the rates doubled Jan 1. The stated legislature has passed a rate relief bill and help is on the way. I just checked on http://www.ameren.com and find that I will be getting a $208 rebate check! Anyone else that lives in Illinois needs to check the web site to see what your getting back!

Whoa, Gary has become a Democrat? :o ...or worse *gasp* a communist supporter? j/k Gary, but you got a give credit where credit is due. :P

“More than two years ago, I voiced my strong opposition to the auction process because it was clear to me that it would benefit large utilities and their affiliates at the expense of consumers. The reverse auction was approved anyway, and I urged lawmakers to send me a bill that would make sure electric consumers wouldn’t be hit with shocking rate hikes. This bill is a good starting point. After carefully reviewing it, I believe it will provide immediate relief and put us in a position to keep working on longer-term electricity issues that need to be addressed to ensure that electricity in Illinois is affordable,” said Governor Blagojevich (D).

I didn't want this to turn into a political thread, only to inform my fellow VJ'rs from Illinios that they have a windfall coming. The reason we got to this point is because of some well meaning but misguided interferance by the Illinois government 10 years ago. Back then they froze any rate increases in an attempt to give the people a break from rising electric costs. 10 years later Ameren is almost broke because of it. So when the freeze was lifted the rates almost doubled. So now the state is bailing the people out with these refunds and rebates. If they would have just left it alone the rates would have slowly gone up and people would have gotten used to it. But now those that are on a fixed income find they cannot afford the massive increase. It's an object lesson in what happens when you mess with a free market.

Thats the last comment on this I will make except to say, no I will not give back the check since I feel this way. I have a TV to pay for you know! :P

Aye, Gary...believing the Free Market is the answer to all of our economic/social problems is just as looney as someone believing that Social Programs are the only answer. Some things work better through privatization, while other things (such as utilities) work better when they are publicly owned and operated.

Oh come on, Gary...don't let me down here. OT wouldn't be exciting if we all just replied like that. :P

Here's something worth noting... (a perfect example of why an unregulated market won't work...or if it works...it's to the demise of the consumer)

...the bill sets up a new state agency to procure and price electricity, replacing the previous process of a "reverse auction" among power generators. Critics have alleged that that auction process could be manipulated by the utility industry to result in higher-than-necessary electricity prices.
