Hi everyone,

Must the K-1 beneficiary have an airplane ticket to the United States before the visa is issued? I have heard that you should buy the airplane ticket before the interview, so that you can show the ticket at the interview and receive the visa. Otherwise, they will not issue the visa until you have proof of travel. Is this true? Just thinking in advance...

I don't think it's necssary, but someone may end up proving me wrong.

Since we don't know yet when the visa will be issued, and also don't know how long after the visa is issued he'll be coming here (before it expires is a given), we weren't planning on having one at the interview.

I havent heard of this practice either, but if Im wrong, someone please speak up. You might want to check with others that are going through the same consulate and ask if they have seen this pattern. I know my consulate is a real PITA when it comes to reviewing evidence; every consulate has their quirks.

I also agree with Limey's logic, how will you know when the visa will be issued? It's difficult to plan a plane trip without a decent timetable.

In any event, good luck at your interview! I hope it goes well :)

Actually the embassy recommends *not* to buy any tickets or even set up wedding plans (rent a place, set dates, etc) before you get your visa approved in your hand, because the visa approval might be delayed or even denied in some cases. When I was at my interview I asked the person interviewing me if I can go and buy plane tickets now, but he said that I should wait for approval of my visa first (I didn't get the visa the same day as my interview, it was sent to me a week later).

It's not needed as a proof of your intentions and probably it's not a smart thing to do, because of the possible delays you might miss your flight.

There is no requirement to have a plane ticket before or at the interview. Most Embassies specifically state "do not buy a plane ticket before the interview"

I can not speak for all embassies or situations. I do believe that the majority will let you know if the interview was a success upon completion.

Dont buy any tickets before your issued your visa. The consulate says this straight up in packet 3. Not to mention its not possible to get a one way ticket with out a visa. Thats the way it works in Australia anyway. If your trying to show them you have proof of going or anything along those lines, just go to a travel agent and get an itinery printed up for a quoted flight. Thats all I did . They didnt even ask for it in the end.

Though it is not recommended to purchase a ticket, it is possible to purchase one without proving you have a visa. If you tell a travel agent you "will" have the appropriate visa, they "will" sell you a ticket. As I have already purchased tickets, before the interview, I know this to be true. Let's just say I'm being optimistic! :)

 If for some reason things don't go as planned... I'll just change the return flights!

we already bought the ticket....but before we bought it we made sure we could cancel it. we found a deal of 600....to fly from brazil to jfk and then from jfk to atlanta. If we cancel we have to pay 10% but it was worth the risk for us. Most of the time tickets like this are over 1000...the company had a one day sale.

Also keep in mind that the K1 allows your fiance either 4 or 6 months to enter the US for the purpose of marrying you (I keep seeing both 4 and 6 in different places but if I remember correctly, official paperwork says 6). So they know that the fiance has a large window of time to wrap up life in their home country before leaving for the US - they couldn't expect you to have the plane ticket at the interview. For a tourist visa they tell you specifically NOT to purchase any tickets.
