My U.S. fiancee is planning on attending my interview in Montreal (still haven't received packet 4 with date......). Does anyone know if he needs a passport to get into the embassy in Montreal? He crosses the border all the time with a b.c. and drivers license and never has a problem. Just wondering if it's absolutely necessary for him to have one. Oh.....one other thing....lol, we have a newborn baby (2 months). Do we need a birth certificate for him to get into the embassy? We still don't have his birth certificate. We have a letter from the hospital and a health card. That's what I use when I cross the border to the U.S.

You have lots of time to email Montreal and ask the questions.

Just ask, My fiance would like to attend my interview. Will he need a passport, or will other ID be sufficient.

I would like to bring my newborn baby, what ID will I need?

Ask simple questions and they might answer you

To cross the border into Canada at a land crossing he's fine but to re-enter the US, he'll need a US passport if it's after January 2008...at least that's the last I've heard. Not sure if he'd need one to enter the consulate though. Did that make sense?

He'll need one sooner rather than later anyhow, might as well send in the application and get it over with.

My husband used his driver's licence and birth certificate back in January 2007. That was all he needed as a USC at that time.. but as others said you may want to double check that with the Consulate via e-mail.. never hurts to ask!

I agree with contacting the consulate directly AND getting that passport application in anyway. :)

My husband came with me but he also had a passport since he flew to Canada to come and visit me prior to my interview.

My understanding is that one benefit of having a US passport and you wish to enter the consulate is that you can go directly to the front of the line, no waiting in any queue...

YMMV

Is there anyone else out there that has a similar situation to me and my fiance? We are applying for a K1 fiancee visa. Just wondering how long it takes to get an interview after you send back packet 3? Will they contact me by mail to my Canadian address or to my fiance at his U.S. address? How long after they notify us will the interview be? Thanks.

Hi Lisa, it'll take Montreal about 4-6 months (closer to 6+ months) after they receive packet 3. They'll send the Canadian the interview letter by mail... you may want to click on this thread: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=39547 (really only look at the later pages) and liz's handy dandy spreadsheet: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pjs...HOCavn_ONGctqIg

Do you have a friend or family in one of the western provinces? If so you could "move" (*cough*) out there and get your case transferred to Vancouver for a faster interview (1 month from them receiving packet 3).

ETA: Just checked your timeline so a transfer probably isn't worth it at this point. Hope that you get an interview date soon!

Personally, I wouldn't be so quick to offer that particular piece of advice anymore, seeing as we know they are really cracking down on transfers right now -- haven't they suspended transfers for now? Or was that my imagination.

just for information - the land POE passport requirements for the WHTI - or whatever it is called! - is scheduled for June 2008, not January 2008 - and that may well change since the US is notoriously ill prepared for implementing the initiative. All the same, it is an excellent idea for the US citizen to get his passport application in now so he has it when he needs it.

Hi Misa,

Thank you soooo much for the info. Do I ask to be added to the timeline? I'm very new at this and unfamiliar with how to do things here (VJ). And you are right, we are pretty close to the interview date so there is no sense in trying to get it transferred to Vancouver, thanks for the advice though.
