Hey everyone. I know there are limitations to the amount of time that permanent residents can remain outside of the United States. My question is, is it necessary for the permanent resident to accumulate time inside of the US immediately after receiving his/her card prior to international travel?

My wife and I are hoping to take a trip abroad next summer for about a month (USCIS permitting), and just want to be sure this won't be a problem.

I think you can go for six months without any problems and up to a year if you have a good explaination. Over a year and you will need to file for a re-entry permit before you leave.

No you don't need to accumulate time in the US, go for it, have fun enjoy. You are talking of next summer... you can leave now if you have your greencard.

Thanks for the quick replies. Still waiting on the AOS, but just trying to make sure that we understand how things work prior to going abroad. Just wasn't sure if you had to reside for a certain number of months/quarters in the US prior to leaving.

Time abroad doesn't count toward the three year eligibility to apply for Citizenship. Otherwise trips under six months have no bearing on permanent resident status.
