Hi,

I have a SSN # that was issued to me when I worked in the USA on my student paperwork. When I enter the US on my K1 and get my passport stamped, do I have to get a new SSN # or do I use the one that I currently have?

Also, does the stamp at the POE allow me to begin working in the USA immediately?

Thanks!

Mary

On the DS-230 form that you will get with Packet #3, it will ask you if you have a SSN - you will use the same one when you move to the US. I have heard of some K-1 entering through JFK and getting an EAD stamp so that they can work. I don't think it is done at all POE. Hopefully someone with this experience will share.

Good luck

Use the SSN that was issued to you when you were a student in the US. Luckily that's one less thing for you to worry about. :D

The stamp at JFK is a temporary EAD which only gives you 90 days work authorization - after that you'll need to file for an EAD so that you can work while you're waiting for green card processing. As mentioned previously, JFK is the only known POE which offers the temporary EAD stamp.

I'll be entering in Detroit, MI. I heard that if they don't give you a stamp at the POE, you can make an infopass appt after entry to get a stamp.

They don't do EAD stamps at any USCIS office, they will tell you that you can apply for EAD using I-765 Based on K-1, but in the case of K-1 filing for EAD before filing for AOS is just a waste of time and money (Costs $340, and can take up to 90 days to get, and will be valid to the I-94 expiration date). If you don't get a stamp, you should file for EAD with or after you file for AOS, (NO Extra charge if filed based on I-485 (AOS))
