If not able to take the oath at a scheduled time

I have to buy a ticket now to go overseas for medical reasons. My test is very soon, and I have no idea when the oath will be scheduled. I am afraid that the oath might be scheduled at a time while I am overseas (I`ll be there for a month). What`s my options, and what`s the best to do?

Another question has just arise in my head-if I`ll be able to take the oath right after the test, do they give the certificate the same day? If not, I`ll be the citizen, but returning to the US with I-551 stamp-I guess that`s a problem already...I guess if they don`t give certificates after the test, taking the oath isn`t the option...

Anybody, please clearify it for me as I don`t really want to call misinformation line.

Best is to reschedual your ticket. Reschedualing the Oath is always the very last resort you should use. It is possible but many find themselves lost in the system once again and wait months or longer to ever get the ceremony back. All that time outside of the country will still be counting for your continues residency and if you go over, you then may be denied the oath later on and have to reset your clock. So best thing to do is wait on the trip...

Some offices approve you for naturalization same day, some don't.

Some offices give oath letters the same day verifying the date of the ceremony, some don't.

Some offices approve and issue the oath the same day, some don't.

In all cases, you receive your naturalization certificate the same day as your oath ceremony.

The other issue, is that legally you must now use an American passport to exit and enter America.  Not always easy to get same-day passport processing, and expedited would still be somewhere around at least two weeks.  You might be able to pull off same-day processing for your passport if you can prove you are leaving the country for medical reasons, can show them travel tickets and MUST travel on or by a certain date.

If you have to leave, keep in mind as said above, your naturalization may be pushed back another 6 months or so, maybe less...but also maybe longer.  And your travel dates will affect your application still because on the day of your oath, they do ask you about travel between getting approved and the oath ceremony.
