I worked for the same company from 1989 to 1998 before quiting for more money after my boss pissed me off. He told me he would match what the other company offered, but I couldn't work for the guy anymore after he screwed me over.

After I left, my old boss and some of the other management in the company got fired and replaced by a new management team. My old company sent letters to former employees such as myself periodically in a recruitment drive to try to lure us back. I eventually shot them a resume and they offered me a 12.5% raise, my seniority, and better benefits. I was gone from them 2 years before returning to them in 2000.

I really wasn't unhappy with the job I had, but the offer from my old company lured me back and I have been back here 7 years already.

However, we just got bought by another company and life isn't so rosey as it was before the takeover. Promises have not been kept by the new guys and the benefits are reduced and not as high quality of health insurance as before the takeover in April. The production platform I am assigned to isn't so great either. Lots of major headaches and stress.

The offshore oil and gas industry is booming and it may be time to look around for greener pastures. However, more money isn't my main goal though. I look at the big picture and money is just one small part of it.

Back in the 80s that was a very good way to get your salary up, at least in the data processing business. COBOL programmers were in high demand back then, now we are nothing but #######

I boomerang'ed a couple of years ago with the company that transferred me here. Management changed 2 years later and I had conflict with the regional business manager, and honestly, I walked out. Apparently she didnt blame me all that much because I was listed as "rehireable" afterward. A year later I re-applied for a position in a different department, getting paid appropriately (raise). Left again after 2 years though :hehe: now I just consult occasionally for them.
