IMO - much of the resentment towards the US & UK is driven by envy. we have the most (better living standards, money, chance of a better future, etc.) is human nature for those w/o to be resentful & envious. many countries seem to have a "what have you done for us latley" attitude towards us. we are the first to get the blame for everything, but when they need help......who do they hold their hands out towards? so i'm w/ Boo-Yah....###### em. & as much as we may not like or agree w/ our foreign policies...they are designed & in place to protect us & our way of life.

its comments like these that are a major reason why people the world over hate us, not because they envy us...one of the fundamental problems between the us and many middle eastern countries is that these countries will not submit to our way of life...we want to go in there and tell them how to live, when they have been doing it for centuries...america is a baby and to think that we know better than them is the most arrogant and ignorant statement ive ever heard...as far as other countries, there are many very wealthy ones, with higher living standards than the US that also resent us...why is that?its because of our foreign policy, not because of our money...we talk about islam wanting to take over the world, did we forget about a little nation known as the US?! clearly our imposition of consumer based capitalist economies (most of which are dependent on the US in some way) has a far greater impact on the world than islam

try checking out where the US ranks as far as standard of living is concerned, you might be surprised

as far as us helping other nations, and them holding out their hands to us in times of need, thats also BS...we help countries when it is in our benefit...if there is nothing we can take from them, profit off of or exploit then we dont bother, and turn the blind eye

and to anyone who thinks that we are out there to 'catch the terrorists' who were involved in 9/11, i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but youre sadly mistaken...its time to wake up kiddies, ask yourself common sense questions before you buy into all the government propoganda bullshhhhhh

i guess you missed the IMO. i don't see the US killing kids & innocent civilians (unless chicken sh!ts are using the as shields) nor have i heard the US or UK denounce everyone as the devil who doesn't carry the same religious views they do. care to point out who if not the US that gives more aid to the rest of the world than anyone else? and if life is so grand elsewhere & the US is so bad, ####### are you doing here?

You missed the point that plenty of people in developed countries outside of the US have criticised the US for its foreign policy activities - isn't that at least part of the reason why relations with Europe have been shaky since the Iraq invasion? Even the UK isn't rock-solid behind this stuff - the govt might be, but the general public are not.

I love the old fall back of "If you don't like it, what are you doing here" nonsense. :bonk:

I agree its a bit cliché for people to keep dredging up that old chestnut. Plenty of people don’t agree with what the government does - I guess things would be much easier all around if the only people who lived here were ‘yes men’

I suspect that dislike of America has more to do with our foreign policy than our films and music (which are generally pretty popular.)

There are a lot of people who watch these films overseas who form an opinion of America based on these films.

The best foreign policy is the one many nations, like Canada, take. Basically live under the radar so someone else takes the flak. Then you look like the good peaceful guy.

Yeah, tell that ####### to the Canadian forces currently in Afghanistan. You know, where the war on terror is supposed to be happening.

I'm going to start charging money for that too.

i was waiting for that comment...i wasnt aware that in order to live in a country one must agree with every action that country has ever taken...i believe in being critical of the US and its policies because that is, afterall, one of the fundamental rights which we are allowed in this fine nation...isnt it? if we just sit back and eat up what is spoonfed to us by the biased media then we will end up with no rights whatsoever, and that sadly is a fact

you dont see the US killing innocent kids and civilians because the media is too biased to show those sorts of things...you think that no innocent people are being harmed in iraq and afghanistan? how many times do you see footage of these wars on the evening news? and i mean, real footage, not just of some reporter standing somewhere within the borders of iraq...one of the reasons that vietnam became such an issue was because of the news broadcastings of the violence that was going on at the time...the difference between this war and that one is that now the media knows it cannot show these sorts of things...

you have your opinion, and i have mine...that doesnt mean i dont have the same right to live here as you, my friend.

i don't remember sayin i agreed w/ everything the gov't does. i'm just tired of all these people trashing the US. my post was called "the most arrogant and ignorant statement ive ever heard". when i stated my opinion. so asked the question. yes the most obvious & easiest to answer question. yet no answer????? what happens in most countries when people steady thrash the gov't? they sure as hell don't get a pat on the back & a "at a boy" now do they? like is said " our foreign polices are in place to protect us & our way of life". weather we understand them or not.

actually i didnt say that, read a little more carefully and you'll see...

'one of the fundamental problems between the us and many middle eastern countries is that these countries will not submit to our way of life...we want to go in there and tell them how to live, when they have been doing it for centuries...america is a baby and to think that we know better than them is the most arrogant and ignorant statement ive ever heard'

to clarify, i was saying that when we go into other countries and try and impose our way of life upon other people, it is the most arrogant thing we could possibly be doing, especially since we are such a young nation and have not seen the struggle that almost every other nation has had to face at some point in their history...IMO, i do think that your first comment conveys an arrogant attitude, but it is certainly not the most arrogant thing ive ever heard...

Unfortunately that is a rather naive view. And while there is a lot of ignorance out there as far as criticisms of the US go, there are people who do understand whats going on and simply disagree with it. Its rather arguable that Iraq (for example) is 'protecting our interests and way of life' in anything but a cynical manner.

my bad. i did jump the gun. sorry. but, i fail to see where the US is trying to get middle eastern countries to submit to our way of life.

It's not hard to see the "we know what's best for you" attitude underlying the policies. Similarly its not hard to see how people would be irritated by that...

thats why its the US foreign policy "its whats best for us" not "whats best for you"

Sure. But if you look at it like that you can't really be surprised that there is resentment. In fact, you would have to expect it.

What do you think Iraq is if not fallout from the 25-30 year old foreign policy decisions? Even before that you need only look at Iran - whose govt was deposed in the 50's (with US aid) to install a more 'malleable' government in the monarchy. Doesn't take much hindsight to see how that turned out... Then in the 80's you have things like the Iran-Contra affair - whose interests did that protect?
