That is scary actually. I have hypoglycemia and something like that could happen to me. My son is only 6 and he is often the only person home with me on weekends. I have trained him to use 911 in an emergency but if that is how they react what good would it do?

How can any of this shock anyone? When you pay people chump change to do a job that involves peoples lives!!

Athletes make millions but those in charge of lives make chump change. Anyone else see something wrong with that?!?

I sure hope they don't start paying 911 operators athletes salaries. Our taxes might go up a little bit if that happens!

Wow! Firing is the LEAST that should happen! IMO, she should be brought up on some sort of charges..not sure that I agree with anything to do with the woman dying(I mean,her actual death) as she may have been dead already..anyurism,etc(sorry sp.) who knows? But she should have something happen. I mean, I'm sure there's some sort of law that says you can be brought up on charges for making prank 911 calls..so why shouldn't it be reversed?? That is HORRIBLE! M.

have you got something against athletes??? loads of professions make more money than ppl who answer 911 calls.....but obviously more training is needed in this case..

This was posted on another board I am on. One of the posters is a 911 operator.

Here is what she says.

Its POLICY to talk to an adult. If you can't you send an officer. Don't judge until you listen to the tape. I refuse to believe that the kid asked for an ambulance and one was not sent.

It is NOT a stupid policy. If you would take 5 minutes to think about it instead of thinking about it through the passion of ONE case.

OK ambulances, police, and fire trucks are ALL limited We can't just make them magically appear. If we dispatched out an ambulance fire truck and police officer to every false call we had, they'd all be tied up on those calls when the REAL calls for service came in and MORE people would die.

Our policy is that if you get a call from a child you ask for an adult, you can't get and adult you work with what you go to the best of your ability. You go by what the child tells you. A child calls me for an ambulance I'll send him one, but I'm also going to try to get info from an adult who can tell me more accurately.

I heard the tape, where the boy said his mom passed out was not audible. I would not have dispatched out an ambulance, I would however not told the kid he was in trouble. I would have generated a call for service to go check the situation out, and it appears that is what that dispatcher did.

If you call 911 in most areas the dispatchers will attempt to re-establish contact with the caller, if no contact can be made to verify there is no emergency then a call for service is created for an OFFICER, (NOT AN AMBULANCE) to go check it out.

I can't comment on why it took 3 hrs for an officer to check the call, because I don't know what the call load in Detroit was that day. My friend works for Detroit PD and their call load is ALWAYS high, they go from call to call to call. I can tell you that if they got a shooting, an injury accident, any type of call with weapons or disturbance, battery calls etc... any type of in progress call, that would have kicked this 911 call down a notch in priority. You have to understand that officers are limited, fire trucks are limited, ambulances are limited. Our resources are limited!

Seriously, if I dispatched units on every 911 hang up I got, when YOU called becasue your baby was choking, because your house was on fire, or you've been robbed, or been in a serious injury accident. I wouldn't have anyone available to send to you because they were out on the 911 call where the kid was playing with the phone.

Matter of fact, I just got a 911 hang up from a 7 year old, I called back talked to the kids brother, I asked for a grown up! (gasp yes I did!) and then I asked mom what the boys name was and asked if I could talk to him, I asked him why he called 911 and he blamed his older brother of course. I told him sometimes we don't have to listen to our older brothers when we know it's wrong, and told him 911 is for emergencies. I also saw the opportunity to do a little bit of quick public education and made sure he knew his address phone number and the other things he needs to know when he calls 911.

Look at that, I just got another 911 hang up call that I didn't dispatch on because I made contact with the caller and it was a dialing error, just think, if I had sent an officer to that we wouldn't have had one to send on the car accident we just got, or the checking the welfare of the lady who is off her meds and drunk at a bar. Imagine.

Please don't judge our service based on your interpritation of a poor perfomance of someone else. You don't judge an entire group of people based on your experience with ONE person. You don't say all black people are violent because one black man was involved in a riot, or one was involved in a gang shooting. You don't say that all arabs are terrorists because of 9/11!!! Don't pass judgement on something you have NO IDEA about what REALLY goes on.

Holy #######... 911 hang up call number 3 just since i've been typing out this damn reply! Guess what I handled it, no units sent!

I just hope if my kids ever have to call 911 we get a dispatcher who is more concerned with saving a life than with 'policy'.

The 911 operator quoted above is making excuses and deserves a good slap. No one showed up at that child's home for 3 and 1/2 hours! The 911 operator did exactly JACK. She was wrong. Period. End of story.
