I still will never buy an iPod. Happy that both of the MP3 players I’ve had have been significantly better technology than the iPods of their day, and a lot cheaper.

Can’t beat a 50 hour battery life, and to be able to choose how you load your content, without having to worry about all that DRM nonsense.

I don't know if many people realize the degradation in music since the CD. To get the sound quality near to that of the old, analog LP's would take up an enormous amount of memory. That said, I think the technology has its place, but the quality of sound is really not as good as people might think.

Most people can't hear the difference or compressed music is good enough.

...until they go hear a live performance, especially in a smaller venue. A drummer told me that he hates listening to CD music because the drums sound all tinsley.

I would expect the drummer to know the difference, but I still don't think most people listening to the show would even care about the difference in sound quality. But with live shows, you are dealing with a completely different environment than you would have with something prerecorded.

I care about the quality of sound, but not enough to go out and invest in good equipment. Since most of the music listening I do, is passive while I'm working. And I live in an apartment, so headphones are what I tend to use.

Me too, but it makes me hesitant to go out and invest CD's or MP3's as collections. Supposedly, a higher quality CD was going to hit the market soon, or has? Blue Ray?

Only thing that looks really cool to me is that you can use it to browse the internet from a wireless point. Still you can do the same thing with phones - and you aren't tied to an access point. Still wouldn't make me buy one - Korea has been putting out some pretty amazing MP3 players recently - the one I have already has the touch screen and you can do a whole bunch of stuff with it.

I notice that Apple has also lowered the memory capacity, which would seem to suggest that they've ditched hard drives and gone over to higher capacity flash memory.

Blu Ray was a done deal up until that contract thing that was signed the other week, tying a couple of the major studios to HD-DVD.

There is DVD audio, which is higher quality and even has audio in 5.1 channels. But it never really caught on. Blue ray storage would be overkill for audio.
