Flight through JFK to get temporary EAD?

I was wondering if anyone had done this (again, my apologies if this topic has been covered), but has anyone ever gone out of their way to get a flight through JFK so the fiancé could get a temporary EAD? My fiancé is from western Canada (a few hours from Vancouver to be exact) and I want him to get a temporary EAD, but the problem is None of the average flights from western Canada to Ohio come through New York, since it not along the way. I was wondering if people have purchased multiple sets of flights (like one to JFK and then a later flight on another ticket) or how one would go about "building" a flight in order to get the temporary EAD. Thanks so much guys!

Some Canadian airports do pre-flight immigration, if you go through one of those airports, you wont be able to get an EAD at JFK.

That's what we plan to do. I've been looking at multi-city flights on different airlines - sometimes it's cheaper if it's all one ticket, sometimes if they are completely separate tickets. We'll end up spending one night near JFK.

With different airlines I was always processed by Vancouver International's pre-flight immigration when I flew to JFK (back in the day when my fiance would drive three hours from PA to pick me up). However, I went through an different situation in December while flying Cathay Pacific - instead of going through pre-flight immigration at YVR I was processed through JFK post-flight. Later I found out that Cathay Pacific does the HKG - YVR - JFK route, so their passengers have to be cleared through JFK immigration regardless of where they boarded their flight.

Anyway, just something to consider if you're trying to get a temporary EAD stamp. :)

The EAD stamp is only valid as long as the I-94 isn't it? I'm not sure what you gain by getting a temp. stamp.

I would agree. I came through JFK and was stamped, but in my experience it's hard to get a job for 90 days. Just hang on tight for ead.

Temp EADS are valid for 3 months. Many people work through a temp agency or at a temp job for that time while waiting for the actual EAD card. It's an opportunity to make some money and have something to do rather than sitting in limbo waiting since there is no way to realistically know if the EAD is going to come in 3 months or longer.

I think the more important thing for the OP is what is the immigration procedure for flights coming out of Canada....

YMMV

I'm flying out tomorrow (9th September) and specially going from Melbourne (Australia) to Singapore, to London, to JFK just to get the temp EAD (all direct flights to the US all go through LAX). After that I have to go to SLC! I'm looking at a 48 hour flight, but money's going to be tight in the next few months and we're trying to cover every scenario - and that includes me getting temporary work.

All flights originating in Canada and coming directly to the U.S. cross U.S. immigration & customs prior to boarding the plane. (With the exception perhaps of Cathay Pacific... ;) So it's not going to make a difference what flight (broadly speaking) you come in on. Even if you land at JFK you'll count as 'domestic' for immigration purposes.

The temp EAD made a significant difference in our case which is why I worked my butt off so C. could get it. (In our case, 'what's it worth?' was significant cash.) 90 days is a lot if you have a job lined up.

We managed to secure it from Boston's Logan Airport after we crossed the border at Buffalo. (Long story, do a search on my nick for the story.) Bottom line, it might not be a bad idea to make an Infopass at your local USCIS office and see if they have suggestions. (Alternately, fly into Boston and ask the guys at the 'deferred entry' area to give you the stamp even though you've already activated your visa.)

Also, doesn't having the EAD stamp make it easier to do things like get a SS#?

No, not really. It only makes it MORE clear to an uninformed agent at your SS office that a K1 is eligible for a SS number (should you happen to have the misfortune to come across one).

For info on SS, research the posts of the member I Quit. There is also a link in the signature of the member TracyTN.

I don't think the temp EAD stamp makes any difference in getting a SSN. Eeryone seems to get it equally easily, and we have the same "Valid for work only with DHS Authorization" printed on the SS card.

My husband went out of his way to get the JFK EAD. We paid $300 more, and had 17-hour wait in JFK just to get that stamp (then he had to take flight to LA and then to Fresno). Connection flights are hard, we chatted with an agent online to get it scheduled (makemytrip.com).

It was really hard to get a job, even temp agencies are slow to give work but finally after weeks of searching he got a job as cashier in a gas station (far cry from the auditing and accounting work he did in India!). Anyway, the over $2,000 he earned for that one month of work (before the 90-day work permission expired) made up for the trouble and expense of getting the temp EAD!:thumbs:
