Insurance for my fiancé when he gets here?

Hello fellow VJers! I'm new to the site so I thought I would say hi!

I have a question and I am sorry if it's been covered before. My fiancé and I are awaiting his NOA2 and someone brought up the topic of insurance, and I began wondering...

I am a student at Ohio State, and I'm covered for my insurance through my parents. I will still be in school when we get married for a few more quarters (hopefully anyway! At the rate that it seems our visa is going I'm not so sure anymore!). I don't know how my fiancé will be covered. He's in good health but in case something were to happen, I'm not sure! I don't know if he could be added to my parents (doubtful), and if he doesn't have a job right away (also doubtful), I don't know what we'll do. Can anyone help me, whether it's directing me to a forum already posted on this topic, or if you can give me any advice? :help:

Thanks so much!!

Talk to your parents about their medical coverage, because from what I know, the only ones that can be covered under one's insurance will be immediate relatives like spouses and children. Some insurance don't even cover parents since it all depends on the insurance underwriters.

I got travelers insurance for my then fiancee. I figured it should cover him in case of an ER visit or something urgent.

I think its best that call the 1 800 number on the back of your current insurance card and as the customer service dept how long you will be able to remain on your parent's coverage-explain that your planning to get married and want to know if coverage will end.

Also you should check with your school to see when the enrollment for your school insurance plan begins. Some universities only do enrollment once a year, are as needed.

I'm sure other people will be able to add to these ideas. Good luck!

You cannot remain on your parents' insurance after you marry. Your fiance and later husband is on his own. You can purchase private insurance or go without.

Your school may have programs that will allow you to get your own insurance at better rates.

The insurance thing can be crazy. I'm currently without insurance. I'm between schools. My old coverage ended in July and my new coverage will begin in October. I've never been without insurance before, but we simply could not afford the private coverage rates. My husband is however, covered by the travel insurance I purchased. I arranged his coverage to end the same day my new insurance coverage begins (which will cover both of us).

Its very important that you talk to the insurance liason at your school. A few other things you should consider...if you get insurance through the school your it is possible to get student loans to cover the premium for you and your spouse (since insurance is billed as a student fee and included in your cost of attedance). I can't emphasize enough that you need to ask about enrollment deadlines. Insurance companies will let you get insurance for your spouse, not a fiance. Best to figure out where your wedding date will fall in regards to the enrollment dealine so that you don't have any nasty last minute surprises.

oh goodness - this is more of a problem then I thought! My school does have insurance programs that we can use, but we'll see! I don't know when to expect the NOA2 or for us to get married - we were hoping to get married on March 7th 2008 but that's not looking too promising right now! :crying:

That is what mine does. I could carry a dependant on my insurance until they left or graduated college or turned 23...I think it is 23...need to check the policy.

As a sponsor for a beneficiary on a K-1 visa, the sponsor is responsible for them which would also include medical expenses so they wouldn't become a ward of the state. Does he have a profession or vocation that he could go into once he has all the proper documents? He could possible be eligable for insurance from his employer.

Keep in mind, no insurance doesn't necessarily mean "no health care." Most school health clinics are available to the public (as well as students without insurance coverage) but for a fee. And most communities have a clinic that charge for services based on income. Which you can easily prove with a statement from finacial aid (your fincial aid award letter) or pay-stub.

No, unfortunately he doesn't. He works for a company that is not in the states so he cannot transfer jobs, and he never went to college so it's hard to get him to transfer... I wish we would have planned it all out a little more before we went and applied for his visa. I don't know what he's going to do when he gets here. I feel so lost now :(

If you do end up with a medical bill of a couple thousand, you can usually call the provider and set it up on a payment plan. If your young, healthy with no pre-existing conditions and not prone to doing stupid risky stuff, your unlikely to end up in a situation where you will run up very expensive bills.

Until this year, I had not been to the doctor for any condition in something like 10 years, except for getting vaccinations. Even then it was only tonsillitis. Which the $115 I paid for the visit is less than I'm pay for insurance each month now.

Generally there are open enrollment times for enrolling in insurance but if you have a change of status, such as marriage or birth of a child, you can enroll at that time. You should still check on it, but you shouldn't need to arrange your wedding date around insurance enrollment.

Until you end up in the ER with a $3,000 kidney stone.

Good luck spending the next half of your life paying off any sort of medical bills.

Most rx medications here will cost upwards of $100. My (single) anti-depressant is $900 per month without insurance. So, yeah, if you're one of the magical minority that never has any medical problems...thank god and buy a lottery ticket.

Don't feel bad! Somethings you can't plan no matter how hard your try. You posted a very good question and lots of people have responded with good advice and idea.

Don't worry about your wedding date. If you're worried about expenses, you may want to have your fiance go through JFK just to get the temporary work permit. We didn't and we're wishing we had- extra money would be great but my hubby is used to working and misses it. Having the temp EAD could help with any health related costs.

My husband didn't go to college either. I think you will be in good shape as long as he doesn't have a "I'm too good for that job" attitude. Not saying he has to do the least desirable jobs, but at least being open to applying for jobs outside of his direct interest, with the understanding that its temporary, will be a plus. If your finace is interested in attending college. I recommend looking at community colleges. They are much less expensive (even their non-state resident fees are more affordable), flexible (many evening classes to accomodate a full-time job), some do not require high school transcripts/high school completion. My husband applied online before he came to the US.

I know a lot of things must be considered and its very stressful. But as someone once reminded me, in a year or two, we will have normal lives like other married couples.
