Getting a marriage license without a SSN???

I know that each state is different - but I'm wondering if people have been able to get a marriage license with only a passport and visa.

In Michigan, starting this week, they are requiring a SSN to get a marriage license. He is arriving in the US on Sept 1st and we will marry on Sept 30th - not enough time to get a SSN then wait for a marriage license.

I'm being told by the person at the county building that we will be ok if I just write on the form that he's not eligible for a SSN - that does NOT give me a warm fuzzy.

More #######. Over one hurdle on to the next!!! :hehe:

we got a marriage license with a driver's license and a provincial ID card! lol

5/23/03: Justin arrives to visit me in IA from SK.
6/7/03: We got married!
8/23/03: Filed I-130 from SK
8/25/03: Phoned border guards & asked if J could escort me back to IA, yes.
8/26/03: Arrive in IA
8/27/03: Went to USCIS local office to ask if J could stay in the US and file papers, yes
2004: I-130 approved!
6/05: Filed AOS/EAD
7/2/05: Rec'd receipt for I-485
8/05: Rec'd RFE for Biometrics
9/9/05: Rec'd RFE for medical
12/2/06: EAD APPROVED!
12/5/06: EAD card rec'd
1/15/06: AOS interview date for 4/11/06 at 11:00 a.m.
4/11/06: APPROVED!!!!!! NO MORE USCIS FOR 10 YEARS!!! WOOHOO!!! 2016...seems more like a page # than a year. Haha.

We got our marriage license in Pennsylvania without a SSN. I think I asked the woman at the county office and she told me to leave it blank for my wife. After our marriage we went to the SS office and applied for my wife's SSN using her married name.

K-1 Timeline

02.02.2005: Sent I-129F to Vermont Service Center

08.08.2005: Successful interview; visa received at 4pm

08.10.2005: Trip to US (Newark Int'l Airport is POE)

AOS Timeline

08.26.2005: Married in State College, Pennsylvania

11.14.2005: AOS and EAD applications received at USCIS

03.10.2006: EAD received (114 days since submission)

06.17.2006: Green card received (241 since submission)

Removal of Conditions Timeline

05.28.2008: Sent I-751 to Vermont Service Center

06.04.2008: NOA1 received

07.05.2008: Biometrics completed in Houston

03.27.2009: Ten year green card approved

Naturalization Timeline

11.09.2009: N-400 package mailed to Lewisville, TX

12.18.2009: Biometrics done in Houston

03.01.2010: Passed interview

04.07.2010: Oath ceremony

He won't have a driver license or state id - he won't qualify for either immediately after his arrival.

The reason I don't necessarily believe her is that it is a new requirement to have a SSN, and by September we may have a problem.

All I'm wondering is how people are able to get to the States and marry so quickly - from what I see in a lot of timelines.

From the pertnent Michigan State Law (MCL 551.102)

(3) A requirement under this section to include a social security number on an application does not apply to an applicant who demonstrates he or she is exempt under law from obtaining a social security number or to an applicant who for religious convictions is exempt under law from disclosure of his or her social security number under these circumstances. The county clerk shall inform the applicant of this possible exemption.

I got married in michigan and I still dont have a SSN.. I dont even remember having to show any ID.. if any I just showed my passport.. but if they are changing the SSN requirement I dont know.. Good Luck!

Many states do not require a SSN to get married but the ones who require will most probably let you if you wrote 'applied for' (not sure but you could ask.) And if all else fails - there's always Vegas. Good Luck

We just showed my passport as well. I hadn't applied for my SSN yet because I hadn't been in the U.S. long enough to show up in their system. I applied for my SSN two days after my marriage.

Ok - I do feel better now. We will have him apply for whatever we can the Monday after he arrives. I do not want to do a civil ceremony (we are both Catholic) so have to have everything in line for the church wedding on 30 Sept.

Just makes me crazy that you know these state offices do not talk to immigration when they make changes like this, and only consider that state residents with all the proper id will be the only ones getting married!!!

But as a K1 holder he IS eligible for a SSN ... the timeline for getting one just might be a tad longer than is convenient to you.
