Please don't blame the pitbulls at least.

More info here

Interesting because the American Pitbull is actually now banned in Australia for safety reasons. All remaining American pitbulls must be put to death.

How barbaric. I would ship them off to Iraq and turn them loose in the streets of Baghdad where they can bite the insurgents.

Just goes to show, a person doesn't have to be 'low class' to be cruel.

Well, it isn't cruel to the dogs. The foxes are the ones that get eaten by the dogs.

The foxes aren't known for being kind to their prey either.

I'd bet they will be put down humanely too, not slammed against the concrete or hung.

Pitbulls bite people fairly rarely though, and they are a fairly common breed in the US.

The most frequent attacks are from German Shepherd Dogs and Chows. Since the don't look as scary or get reported on the evening news, no one talks about banning Chows though.

Dog bans in states

In recent years, the dogs responsible for the bulk of the homicides are pit bulls and Rottweilers:

"Studies indicate that pit bull-type dogs were involved in approximately a third of human DBRF (i.e., dog bite related fatalities) reported during the 12-year period from 1981 through1992, and Rottweilers were responsible for about half of human DBRF reported during the 4 years from 1993 through 1996....[T]he data indicate that Rottweilers and pit bull-type dogs accounted for 67% of human DBRF in the United States between 1997 and 1998. It is extremely unlikely that they accounted for anywhere near 60% of dogs in the United States during that same period and,
thus, there appears to be a breed-specific problem with fatalities."

The Clifton study of attacks from 1982 through 2006 produced similar results. According to Clifton study, pit bulls, Rottweilers, Presa Canarios and their mixes were responsible for 65% of the canine homicides that occurred during a period of 24 years in the USA.

Other breeds were also responsible for homicides, but to a much lesser extent. A 1997 study of dog bite fatalities in the years 1979 through 1996 revealed that the following breeds had killed one or more persons: pit bulls, Rottweilers, German shepherds, huskies, Alaskan malamutes, Doberman pinschers, chows, Great Danes, St. Bernards and Akitas. Since 1975, fatal attacks have been attributed to dogs from at least 30 breeds.

Sure - but the onus is really on the sadistic human participants and spectators. People are goading the dogs to kill the foxes; just as they used to goad dogs to attack tethered bears.

The dogs will hunt a fox or rabbit just fine on their own - they don't need humans to encourage them.

The reason these dogs bark is to help the humans find them after they have caught, cornered, or treed their prey.

There was a practical reason for having these dogs. Foxes were eating food for humans. Beagles are better at hunting rabbits, which are a major pest for vegetables. It isn't just foxhounds and beagles, other dogs were also bred to protect flocks of sheep, or herds of cows.

Farmers still hunt rabbits, as they are a major pest in agriculture. Even if you are a vegetarian, rabbits are still being hunted to allow the cultivation of your organic vegetables.

The ones that aren't shot get killed in combine harvesters. Vegetarian or not, we all have animal blood on our hands.

Sure - but indirectly or through a very deliberate sport, the object of which is the killing of an animal.

Little difference between that and sticking pins in the eyes of family pets IMO. Contrary to what the Fox Hunting community said in defence of their upper class pleasure pursuit, their little country jaunts didn't do much to reduce the fox population.

Ah, that's why bunny slippers are so popular with the family dog!

total agreement..but, fox hunting in rural america is done with a drunk group of buddies...a call (dying rabbit, sounds like a woman getting raped) and all hiding waiitng for the fox to come an investigate and then blasting him to hell...

see, raccoon hunting...where they let the dog tree him and them all shoot him.///

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Well, it isn't an upper class sport in the US. In the UK (where it is now banned), the foxhounds would tear the fox into little pieces by the time the hunters caught up with the pack. It isn't quite the same in the states.

In the US, it is more common for dogs to tree game, at which point they start barking. The hunters catch up, and then shoot it.

It is unlikely that any of us would be here today if our ancestors were not such good hunters. With the help of dogs, humans are incredibly good hunters.

This whole Vick thing is really dumb, if you ask me. No dog is worth ruining a person's life for.

They should have just fined him and told him not to do that again.

When his coach and the NFL asked him about it, prior to any formal charges, he denied any involvement. That was really dumb.

I love my dog. I hope he rots in jail for years.
