So our trip began on Sat at 3AM (yes you read correct!) when my fiancee and I set out to drive to NC. Crossed the border at Peace Bridge.

The officer at the booth took our passports and asked us a few questions. Afterwhich he wished us luck and told us to drive safe!! We were like hell no! What about the package that I got from the consulate that you guys need to open and review the papers there in!

He was like "Oh, I am sorry. Let me have your passports and I will look at them once more.". The guy knew we were K1 and we needed to activate them, but did not know that we needed to go to the office and get them activated.

Thereafter, we were asked to pull over and go to office booth #5.

We parked and walked to #5.

There we sat for a few minutes. It was ~4.30AM and not so many people, but that's exactly what we wanted as it was the long weekend and we wanted to beat the rush!

After a while, we were called in behind the secured door. To our surprise we were going to be handled by a newbie!!! Anyhows, we were there for ~1hour bacause the guy was reading the manual and did not know what to do [even with the manual]. Eventually, he managed to get some help from the other officer.

In the meanwhile, we asked for the EAD and were told that they do not issue that anymore.

Left the POE ~6AM and headed on our trip to NC. When we reached home, it was ~15 hours since we left home in Toronto.

We had no single question asked at the POE. The guys did not ask anything about the car, or make me pay import duty. My car was not searched nor was I asked for the item list!! -- nada, zip, nothing!

I wish I carried all my stuff that I left behind in TO fear of them ransacking my car and questioning. [and I am not talking of the monies you all sweet people donated to my fund. Can be found at here ]

Yesterday, we got married! -- yaay! (not going to say much on this as you know it is the day you have longed to see for a long long time. C'on guys we got married, wish us! ;))

We got all the paperwork related to the marriage done and we expect the certificate/docs to be mailed to us in a weeks time. fyi: they asked for driving license and passport as IDs.

The next step after we get this is:

  • Name change for my wife! yes, she is officially my wife!!!
  • AOS application
  • EAD application
  • Travel docs application
  • SSN application
  • Bank account set ups
Many thanks to fellow VJ'ers for all their insights and experiences postings! The BEST site ever.

Congrats!

Reorder your to do list though. Go to the SSA in 2-3 weeks and get your SSN. If you go too close to the expiration on your I-94, they won't issue you an SSN until you have an EAD or SSN.

See this guide: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...om&page=ssn

Congrats Sapa!

Quick question - I'm going to be getting married in NC as well and for the marriage license they ask for a SSN or an affidavit (I think) of why you don't have one. What did you do in this case when applying for your license?

Thanks!

jenmac75, I saw this on the board recently (within the past month, can't remember which forum it was in) regarding North Carolina, SSNs and marrriage licenses. I can't remember what the end result was but you can apply for your SSN 2-3 weeks after entry and it'll take about a week to get to you. Then you can go down to the county clerk's office and get the marriage license.
