When will I know my Visa has been approved/denied?

Hello,

I know that once I have my interview in Montreal, they will then send me my Visa in the mail.

Does anyone know if I have to wait for the Visa to be sent before I know it is approved or denied, or will they tell me at the consulate, and then it's just a matter of waiting for the paperwork?

My employer has inquired as to how much notice I'll be able to give, and since I plan on leaving the minute the Visa is in my hand, I'm not sure if it is safe to give notice when I go for my interview, or wait till the approved visa is in hand.

11/09/07 - Visa APPROVED in Montreal (should receive in 2-3 weeks)

11/16/07 - picked up visa at the post office today (2-3 weeks my a$$)

Entered US December 4th!!

Married December 22nd

AOS Journey

01/11/08 - sent AOS package to Chicago Lockbox

01/13/08 - USPS confirmed delivery of AOS package

01/14/08 - received new SSN with married name

01/19/08 - received all 3 NOA's

02/04/08 - case transferred to CSC (notified online)

02/11/08 - biometrics

02/14/08 - case received at CSC

03/08/08 - approval notice for travel document sent (notified online)

03/12/08 - EAD card approved

03/14/08 - received AP

03/15/08 - received EAD

03/16/08 - AP and EAD touched?? I have already received them.

03/26/08 - AOS touched!!

03/27/08 - AOS touched again...

05/12/08 - Card Production Ordered!!

05/13/08 - Welcome letter has been sent

Yup, they will tell you at the interview whether you've been approved, denied, or pending approval (if they need any additional info from you or if for whatever reason your namecheck hasn't cleared).

I gave my notice 2 months before I actualy left. It was one of those "courtesy" things for me personally. I kept my boss updated weekly from what I gleaned from VJ (people who filed around me) and let him know as much as i knew about timelines. My boss let me work until 2 days before I left for the US, they were very understanding and supportive (and knew I needed the job as long as possible to make the most $$ as well as to keep myself sane)..

I hope your boss is as understanding..

AOS:

2007-02-22: Sent AOS /EAD

2007-03-06 : NOA1 AOS /EAD

2007-03-28: Transferred to CSC

2007-05-17: EAD Card Production Ordered

2007-05-21: I485 Approved

2007-05-24: EAD Card Received

2007-06-01: Green Card Received!!

Removal of Conditions:

2009-02-27: Sent I-751

2009-03-07: NOA I-751

2009-03-31: Biometrics Appt. Hartford

2009-07-21: Touched (first time since biometrics) Perhaps address change?

2009-07-28: Approved at VSC

2009-08-25: Received card in the mail

That is all great to know.

And yes, my boss is very understanding. I just think I am ready to give them notice to far in advance. What if I jinx myself and my visa is denied or delayed. ugh... can I shudder now? hehe

I'd have that honest discussion with your boss.. Hopefully they can accommodate your "fluid" timeline....
