the number of white vs black people in this ad does not make it racist

there was absolutely nothing racist about it

I think you may think that it is racist because you want to believe that it is

Make a commercial with 20 black men in a pen and a white man mocking them. See what happens.

wailing for one..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Other than that the young guy in those commercials happens to be black, I'm not sure how it is racist. Seems to me there's more of a case for ageism than anything else.

Even so - if people do see racism in that commercial, its a huge stretch of the imagination to go from that to saying that WAMU itself is somehow institutionally racist.

WAMU is a crappy bank anyway. Their customer service is a joke.

Any more so than Wells Fargo or B of A?

Big banks tend to be of a muchness IMO.

BOA is awesome compared to WAMU.

For one there would be 500 more condemnation posts on VJ.. Yet when reversed there is the stock standard excuse followed by tumbleweed. I am waiting for the "get over it" statement..

If certain people hung Imus like that can you imagine what would happen to Wachovia, for example, if they had a similar commercial with the opposite characters. Forgetaboutit.....

Would this have been an issue if the young guy in the commercial was white? Probably not - although you'd get people making similar claims about it not being representative or inclusive.

I agree that showing a bunch of old, white bank managers is somewhat stereotypical, but its a stereotype wouldn't exactly make sense merely by reversing it.

Other than skin color (which is a superficial characteristic at the end of the day) - what is it about the young guy in that commercial that jumps out at you to specifically say "I am a black man"?

Well as I said to you before - what Imus said literally amounted to the "N" word on public air-waves. Whether he realised that the phrase he used was offensive is rather arguable - but I think that his comments got rather more press than was really merited.

We have B of A out of necessity (Wells Fargo doesn't serve the East Coast). But I can't say I've really found them all that exceptional really. In fact the only thing I find exceptional is the huge amount of junk mail we get from them. Didn't much like Wells Fargo for that matter - only got an account because the wife had one before we were married.

Only thing that would attract me to WAMU is the free checking - its nuts to me that you have to pay a penalty to use another banks ATM (this used to happen with UK banks until it was made illegal under European Law).

Also can't get my head around the idea of paying for checks. Used to get those free of charge with Barclays.

Also the 'low balance' charges don't seem particularly justifiable to me.

Apart from that I've found customer service for all large banks, both here and in the UK to be mediocre at best.
