Hello All,

We are in the process of applying for adjustment of staus...does anyone know if we can translate my wive's birth certificate (PERU) from Spanish to English ourselves, or is it required to have a certified translator do the job????

Thanks in Advance!!!!

Hi,

on top of page 3 of the instructions for filing I-485 the USCIS asks that documents in foreign languages must be accompanied by a full English translation which the translator has certified to be complete and accurate.

So no, you can't translate it yourself - unless you are a certified translator and competent to translate from the foreign language into English.

Get a certified translation, don't risk a RFE or rejection by not doing so.

Good luck!

Some people will come in and say YOU CAN'T DO IT YOURSELVES! but we translated my husband's ourselves and had no RFE, approved for residency in 7 weeks. So obviously it's okay, and you should be fine.

You only have to certify that you yourself are competent to do so in a sworn statement that can be found in the guides. We wrote the statement with my husband's own name certifying the translation, no RFE.

For now, USCIS for the most part will accept translations done on your own - when they change that, you may have to go to someone they consider a certified translator, but for now? Nope.
