hi everyone!

im 17, i entered US via K2 visa. we've had our biometrics taken 2 weeks ago for the aos. as part of the plan, even before arriving here in San Francisco, is to go back to the Philippines after receiving my conditional green card to continue my college education. i am supposed to be a sophomore now at the university of the philippines in diliman. i heard that the uscis allows up to 6mos? (would that mean i can go back to US before 6 months of departure or 6 months added up together?) i guess six months is not good enough, i mean that would be money in terms of air fare if that would be the case. maybe at least a year would do for 3 more years of my college. is a year or longer possible? any suggestions? :)

thanks in advance. :P

You may be able to get up to 2 years by getting a reentry permit!

You know thats also my concern with regards to my son, coz i have a plan that he will also continue his studies in the Phils, but he is now in Senior High school, and after graduation we will fly to U.S., but he will be going back to the Phils, to continue his studies.

it would really be a whole lot emotionally and socially stable to study back there. not to mention how expensive college is here, though loans are widely-advertised. the other side would be a perhaps year delay but oh they have 11th and 12th grades here so nothing really to worry,

You can file form I-131 and it is valid up to 2 years. Also have to file N-470 to maintain naturalization rights.

hi thanks for replying. the purpose of the n470 states... For a permanent resident alien who must leave the United States for certain employment purposes and wishes to preserve his or her status as an immigrant in order to pursue naturalization. the first question in the form asks for the reason of absence in the US and no option points out to education? everything is employment-related. help!

According to what I have ready you can stay outside the U.S. for 6 months with no problems and can probably stay up to a year if you have a reasonable excuse. Over a year will require filing a re-entry document which I am not sure what that is, maybe someone else can name it. It could be the I-191 but I am not sure.

Yeah I checked it out. You are correct as the N 470 is for employment people only.

As a student you may have to end up losing time required for naturalization if you stay more than one year.

Jasman! "Looks like" CPR can use the I -131 to get a "reentry permit" up to 2 years OR until the date you have to remove conditions. I guess that would be a bit less than 2 years depending upon when the GC was approved.

hi. guess you've received a lot of good advise from the great people here. i'm also from UPDil, though I did finish my studies before moving. Considering the rates of colleges and univerisities here, I'm also planning on getting my degree (master's) back in the Philippines... But also considering all the paperwork necessary (and the costs!) I'll probably wait til after naturalization. It's a few years down the road, but that'll just give me time to save up for it.

Good luck with your case!

(sorry, no advise from me.. just sharing my thoughts!)

np iya! my relatives back home really wanted me to graduate at upd. probably you know what i'm saying. its kinda big deal. maybe unless i make it to the big universities here, lol. but some of my relatives here are telling me to try out college here (with all the loans available) so i can easily get a job afterwards because they say that a diploma from here isn't the same as in the philippines (even if you came from the best univ whatsoever). if i may ask, did they recognize your UP degree? i mean was it a plus in anyway? :)

Still no EAD/GC yet, so no jobs.. but based on inquiries I've made with regards to continuing education here, "UP" doesn't have as much weight as degrees from here. You'll still have to get your transcripts translated (Tagalog paperwork in UP is kinda.. grr...), and you have to have certain certified institutions to determine the equivalent grades (in American standard) of whatever courses you have taken.

In my opinion, if you can afford to study here, dito na lang! More expensive (in some cases, 1 term here = 1 degree in UP!!) , but I guess in terms of hassle, you'll definitely get less. In terms of quality, it will depend on what course and what college you're considering..
