anywho today I find out that there was an earthquake yesterday...

Mild earthquake rattles southern California, no injuries

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — A mild earthquake shook parts of southern California on Sunday but there were no reports of injuries or serious damage, authorities said.

The 4.7 magnitude quake struck at 10.29 am local time (1729 GMT) about 81 kilometers (50 miles) southeast of Los Angeles near Lake Elsinore, the US Geological Survey reported.

Witnesses near the quake's epicenter, which occurred near the Santa Ana Mountains, reported being jolted by the tremor but police and fire authorities said they had received no reports of injuries or damage.

"There were no injuries reported to us at this time," said Jody Hagemann, spokeswoman for the Riverside County Fire Department.

Seismologists believe there is a chance California will suffer a major earthquake due to movement in the San Andreas fault, which runs close by Los Angeles. Experts say the fault line causes a massive quake every 150 years. The last such disaster was in 1857.

In January 1994, a 6.7 magnitude quake in Northridge, near Chatsworth, was blamed for 72 deaths, more than 10,000 injuries and around 12.5 billion dollars worth of damage

Each part of the country seems to have its own particular brand of environmental challenge - earthquakes on the West Coast (although let's not forget the New Madrid fault in the middle of the South East), blizzards and tornadoes on the plains and around the Great Lakes States, hurricanes and tropical storms along the Gulf Coast, Florida and the Eastern Seaboard. . . I am not sure if any of them is better or worse than another because they all have the potential to be catastrophic! That being said, I am pretty sure I wouldn't want to experience a strong earthquake, especially if I was indoors anywhere or near something that could fall on me. Come to think of it, I don't want to experience a strong hurricane . . . or a strong tornado either. I have done the strong blizzard - those I can handle!

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I remember the first (and only) earthquake I felt - it was only like 3.7 or something though. I got really excited and found bunches of websites online where you could see the earthquake activity on a daily basis all over the world - it showed how big they were and where the epicenter - it might be worth checking out :D

I know SoCal is due a biggie - apparently the southern part of the SA fault is like 24 inches behind the northern part and needs to catch up sometime... Hopefully we'll have moved further east by then...

I'm going to be honest here and say that I don't envy anyone in California... :(

Have to agree with you there. :(
