uummm....guys

I just had my wallet stolen recently. It happened here, in Moldova, and I didn't loose much...or so I thought. I remembered that I had my SS card there.

I have the interview in 1 month. Is that going to be affected by the lost SS card and are they going to make me wait 'till I get a new card?

Also, will I still be able to get a work permit at JFK without it?

God...I feel like everything is against me...

Thank you

I don't think it will affect your interview at all. If you have a SS card it means you have worked here in the States before. Social Security will issue a replacement at your local SS office. I do think that the possibility of a work permit without having a SS card on hand is slim to none. You will definitely need to get a new card issued before you can work.

Do you think it's possible to get a new card within this month while I am waiting for the interview? I don't know if Michael will be allowed to submit documents or whatever there is to submit for me or not. I have copies of the card but that's all...

Yeah i know...It's just that I traveled a lot and that little card was risking to be lost more in other places than in my wallet. For three years I kept traveling a LOT....

I still had Mikey tell me quite a few this morning...ouch...i think my future hubby is a little upset with me...

He said he's still gonna marry me though...:D

Your biggest concern should be identity theft.

However, you can apply for a new card:

From http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10002.html#lost

"What if my card is lost or stolen?

You can replace your card or your child’s card for free if it is lost or stolen. However, you are limited to three replacement cards in a year and 10 during your lifetime. Legal name changes and other exceptions do not count toward these limits. For example, changes in noncitizen status that require card updates may not count toward these limits. Also, you may not be affected by these limits if you can prove you need the card to prevent a significant hardship.

To get a replacement card, you will need to:

Complete an Application For A Social Security Card (Form SS-5);

Present a recently issued document to show your identity;

Show evidence of your U.S. citizenship if you were born outside the United States and did not show proof of citizenship when you got your card; and

Show evidence of your current lawful noncitizen status if you are not a U.S. citizen.

Your replacement card will have the same name and number as your previous card."

I do think that the possibility of a work permit without having a SS card on hand is slim to none. You will definitely need to get a new card issued before you can work.

Since you often (but not always) need to prove that you're work authorized to get the social security card, this is wrong. C. received his EA stamp at Boston (long story) without a social security number, and then applied for a social security number the next day. You do NOT need to have the social security number first. People come here on employment visas, start work, apply for the social security card, and give their employers the social security number within 90 days of starting.

To the OP: You should be just fine to get the stamp because the K-1 is work authorized. Many, many fiances pass through the POE and get the stamp having never been here before and thus having NO way to have a SSN.

I don't know what you need to do to get a replacement card, but as far as working goes, you have your ID, the EAD stamp to prove you're allowed to work, and you can give them your social security number, just not prove it. Give them a call now. I'm not sure what the procedure is for reporting a lost card, especially when you're overseas, but you have a number, just no way to prove it.

Hey guys

Thank you very much for your help. So overall what I understood that first I need to call them and cancel the one I have and than apply for a new one once I'm in the US.

I do know my number and I even have saved pay stubs from a couple of jobs I held. I even have scanned and printed copies of it.

It takes a stone off my chest knowing that I shouldn't have problems getting an EAD. I wont be able to stand it more without working. I need a job to feel like I'm doing something :)

Thank you very much for your fast replies.

As always...:)))

THANK YOU!

dont carry the stupid thing with you as you need it very seldom.

I think the US Consulate there can help you get a replacement....for sure if you were a US Citizen.

Yeah I know...It was a stupid thing to do...I guess that'll teach me..

I don't want to apply for a replacement here since i'm afraid it might delay the interview date. It's in less than a month. I would prefer to just do it in the US since everything is panned.
