I didn't really want to say anything before we had all the good news, but here goes. :)

A few weeks ago, Bee got word that a position in his company was opening up due to some management shuffling. Funnily enough, this is the same position that he'd applied to six months ago, but was passed up for another person. His boss said that he'd only put Bee's name into the list of recommendations this time, and then we played the waiting game.

We found out on Friday that Bee is getting the promotion

Since then, we've discussed our options and have decided that I'll be moving over in November, which is WAAAAAAAAY earlier than we thought. (And I am so thrilled because I miss Bee like mad :D and leaving my increasingly unbearable living situation early is fantastic.) Which means... omg panicking what do I need to do?!

Here's my list so far:

  • obtain driver's abstract
  • changing addresses
  • cancelling cellular phone service
  • EI and all that jumbledy
  • banking stuff
  • contacting BC MSP for non-residency
  • selling/recycling/donating non-essentials
  • packing my life into boxes
  • figuring out how to get my boxes to PA
  • wondering how I'm going to ship a computer
Am I missing anything :P and who wants to be the first for awesome advice and big yippees? :D

YIPPEE! Congrats on things working out. Since I'm a night owl (I'm running on no sleep) I guess that makes me the first to offer joyful utterances ineffable. The best piece of advice is to take it easy, you really don't have to do everything at once. Sorting out things always takes forever, so do it in smaller segments. Same thing with packing and moving. Enjoy your new life in the Keystone state and don't panic.

Congrats!! When it came to recall what to cancel, I took everything out of my wallet, that gave me a good list to start with. I cancelled all my movie rental store subscriptions as well.

I believe I got my BC drivers abstract online! Just went to ICBC webpage and found the info.

Some of the specialty packing/postal stores, have a "computer" service. You bring in ur computer, they will wrap it up properly and ship it. Not sure if it comes with a guarentee.

When it comes to keeping a Canadian bank acct open, seems most have the best luck with TD or RBC. Presidents choice said they would close my acct after 6 months!! I just gave them my folks addy in SK. I do know after 6 months on no activity, PC deems the acct dormant!! I then have to phone to get it "active" again!

As well you should change ur addy with the govt of Canada. One can do that online: http://www.canada.gc.ca/MGA/intro_e.html Your signing up for an Epass acct. Has been a few yrs for me since signing up, but i think it asks for an amt on one of ur line #'s on a previous tax yrs return??

congrats

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Hey that is very soon, congrats! I was thinking of one other thing, don't know if it is helpful or not, I think I have seen here before where the person got a letter from their car insurance company, just stating that you have been a customer since - whenever, generally they always ask if you have had auto insurance before, so that might be helpful to have too.

When packing don't forget to number the boxes and make a list. :)

Congrats! There was a list here somewhere with "moving tips" too... do a search for it and it'll probably come up.

As for your computer, it's a desktop yes? At the very least, take out the HD and bring that with you and ship the rest. You can also take the cards out and bring it with you as well. You know, ever since I switched to laptop only, I don't think I could ever go back to a desktop!

That's a great idea. HDs are pretty solid but in moving they can get damaged. Transfer all your important files to your cruzer or whichever flash drive you use and keep it with you. That way you don't need to touch the HD and if you need the files you can use them anywhere.

Yippee!

I've just started packing too. Here are a few more tasks for the list:

  • Give your landlord/landlady notice.
  • Arrange for movers (I'm going to use Upack).
  • Get added to your fiance's health insurance effective the day you arrive in the US, if possible. If that isn't possible, get temporary health insurance in the US to cover you until you can get coverage through your fiance.
  • Get a copy of your medical file from your doctor. If you take any prescription medication, stock up on it.

See the Airporter (also the airport site) for transportation from the airport. One-way trips are $13.50, and round trips are $21. I don't know if it goes from hotel to hotel, though.

From the airport to downtown, you'd have to transfer between buses if you take local buses. I'm not sure what buses go near the hotel. Check out the trip planning page.

A taxi ride would probably cost around $25 one-way.

Good luck with your interview. :)

what do I need to do?!

U-pack has a detailed moving checklist and other resources. Not everything on it applies to everyone, but it has some things I hadn't thought of. The site also has a "Do not ship" list.
