Farmers and other locals were chasing thousands of minks let out of their cages at a fur farm in western Finland early on Friday by suspected animal rights activists.

About half the 2,500 minks released from unlocked cages in Mustasaari, 400 km (250 miles) northwest of Helsinki, had been recaptured by 1000 GMT, but it could take several days to round up the others, police said.

"We have no firm suspects at the moment. But the letters EVR were spray-painted on a feed silo at the farm. In this connection it usually means Animal Liberation Front in Finnish," Chief Inspector Mika Jylha told Reuters, but added: "Of course, anyone could write that."

We had a case similar to that where I used to live in Ontario - animal activists let breeding stock out of their cages in the middle of winter. Canadian winters are cold, and the minks were no longer acclimatized to the weather. Three quarters of the minks released were known to end up dead - from weather, from fighting with each other, or killed on the major highway that ran close by. Many others not found may well have starved to death at that time of year. Only a few of the thousands released were recaptured in good health; most were sick and badly injured. The activists - from Michigan - were captured and convicted. The worse part of all of it was that they put no thought into what 'freedom' in that environment meant for the minks, sentencing them instead to horrific deaths. Their excuse? "We didn't think about that, we just thought about giving them freedom from their cages".

Personally, as a prisoner I would prefer the risk involved with the harshness of the wild over certain death in the near future.
