I thought I saw a thread on this somewhere but can't find it now so I'll just ask:

Does anyone know how it works for when Crash comes here for good? I know he'll probably have to take the road test but what about that 6 hour class? Is that just for new drivers meaning someone who's never had a license before or new New York drivers?

Thanks...

in talking this over we have a few questions:

1. will crash have to give up his UK driving license?

2. how will that effect his ability to drive in the UK when we go over on holiday and/or plan to retire there eventually?

3. his british license allows him to drive trucks.. that won't carry over to the NY license at all will it? and if he gives up his UK license he will then lose that entitlement 7.5 ton trucks won't it?

4. since he will be coming in on a CR1 is he considered an immediate permanent resident or not because he's conditional? so would he have to wait the 2 years?

5. does he have to tell the NY DMV he has a UK license? or can he just go in as a new driver? after all they will be treating him as such by making him get a learner's permit and start from the very beginning like a teenager?

Sorry for all of these questions but as you can guess we've been talking lol

* NYS recognizes your foreign driver license if you remain a resident of the nation that issued the license. You do not need to have a NYS driver license to drive in NYS unless you become a resident of NYS.

* If you have a driver license from any nation except Canada, you must pass a written test, complete a 5-hour pre-licensing course and pass a road test to qualify for a NYS driver license. See "New Drivers - How to Apply".

* You must show a Social Security Card. If you are not eligible for a Social Security Card, you must provide a letter or form SSA-L676 from the US Social Security Administration (SSA) that states that you are not eligible. The SSA Letter or form must have been issued no more than 30 days before the date of your application. You must also show the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) documents that the SSA used to determine that you are not eligible for a Social Security Card. Read the specific requirements on the identification requirements page.

* When you receive your NYS driver license, you must surrender your foreign driver license to the DMV road test examiner. The local DMV office keeps your foreign driver license, and then destroys the license after 60 days. If you plan to return to your home country and use your foreign driver license, ask the road test examiner how to make sure that your foreign driver license is not destroyed. If you need to get your foreign driver license, go to the local DMV office where you applied for your NYS driver license.

Thanks Marilyn, we saw all of that at the DMV site. Crash just wants to know if he HAS to give up his UK license.

1. will crash have to give up his UK driving license?

Yes he is supposed to

2. how will that effect his ability to drive in the UK when we go over on holiday and/or plan to retire there eventually?

If you give up your license, you can ask the NYDMV to store it for you in case you return home for good, returning on holiday you can use your US license, has it's advantages

3. his british license allows him to drive trucks.. that won't carry over to the NY license at all will it? and if he gives up his UK license he will then lose that entitlement 7.5 ton trucks won't it?

No nothing carries over I'm afraid. I'm going to have to return home in October to take a physical to renew my UK bus license, would imagine truck drivers have to do the same

4. since he will be coming in on a CR1 is he considered an immediate permanent resident or not because he's conditional? so would he have to wait the 2 years?

Sorry don't know, wait 2 years for what?

5. does he have to tell the NY DMV he has a UK license? or can he just go in as a new driver? after all they will be treating him as such by making him get a learner's permit and start from the very beginning like a teenager?

As I said he is supposed to, as for myself I never told them and they never asked

From what i have read from the UK , DVLA in Swansea , if you become a resident of another country you have to return your UK licence to Swansea as you are no longer classed as a resident , therefore you do not have a permanent residence in the UK, see from part 2 of your counterpart UK licence item #5

Changes to name, permanent address and health.

You must tell DVLA at once of any change to your permanent address, using the section provided overleaf

. You need only notify a change of address in GB. An address outside GB cannot be entered on your licence
