I love freedom of choice. Now the tax payer has to pay for her actions.

Drunk Mom Lets 5-Year-Old Drive

Chris Profitt Reports

Holly Schnobrich

An Indiana woman is in jail for allegedly allowing her 5-year-old child to drive a car.

Neighbors were able to prevent the situation from turning into a tragedy over the weekend.

"I saw a toddler at the wheel and another toddler on the console. I said, 'Ma'am, are you letting your toddler drive?' She said, 'Yes. He's a good driver,'" said Wendy Barrett.

Holly Schnobrich, 24, of Lafayette was also a passenger in the car. She's now in jail, charged with two counts of neglect of a dependent and one count of public intoxication.

She is the mother of the 5-year-old boy driving the car. Her 3-year-old was also in the car.

"He was on his knees saying he was driving mommy's car and having trouble reaching the pedal," said Barrett.

Barrett and her neighbors quickly grabbed the keys and pulled the children from the car before calling 911.

They say Schnobrich was visibly impaired and asked for the keys so she could drive away with the children.

According to a police report, the woman's speech was slurred and she failed all field sobriety tests.

She also allegedly told deputies that she'd taken Percocet, a prescription painkiller for "when the kids are acting wild."

Prosecutors and witnesses believe this isn't the first time Schnobrich has let the 5-year-old drive.

Her arrest comes just four days into probation after pleading guilty to DUI.

Officers also allegedly found a large bottle of over-the-counter sleeping pills recently purchased and nearly consumed.

"These children were placed in great danger by the person who legally should be providing the care and protection of them," said Patrick Harrington, Tippecanoe County prosecutor.

Police say Schnobrich endangered her children and anyone on the road near their car Saturday night.

The children were safely taken by the Department of Child Services.

Police also say Schnobrich also was the only one in the car wearing a seatbelt.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

There goes her insurance rates........straight through the roof !

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Stuff that was once common sense seems to be forgotten in 2007. Our schools need to get back to the basics. They need to start reteaching people how to behave like normal human beings and actually think before they act. I understand people where given the freedom of choice but I do not believe they meant for it to be used as it now is as a get out of jail free card; irrespective of how your decisions negatively affect and impact others..

Imagine how many people could have been killed.. I am not a fan of capital punishment as it does not work since the criminal is not around to feel the consequences of their actions but am a huge fan of reintroducing corporal punishment. If people want to start acting like its the dark ages we need to start treating them, fire with fire, like its the dark ages. It is clear that the current form of appeasement or harsh sentencing simply does not work.

Good luck with that. That's kind of what happens/ed in countries whose regimes we despise (Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Afghanistan).

Probably why they had very low crime rates.

That and the dictatorial regimes which we are so quick to condemn and yet at the same time so ready to emulate.

Countries end up with dictatorships because some idiot thinks he has a black and white solution for all of society's ills.

Or to the contrary they end up like modern England. The land of appeasement.

What ever happened to the two kids there who kidnapped a toddler, tortured him to death and killed him.

PS Corporal punishment does not have to lead to a dictatorship. Instead of a repeat child rapist, for example, serving 25 years you beat the ###### out of him.

They were punished to the fullest extent that the law allowed.

2 questions.

1) Then what?

2) Would you like to be the guy holding the whip?

Why don't you list what they did to their victim and explain where they are now located..

Nothing much to it. Repeat offenders are a huge and undeniable problem. These people cannot be rehabilitated. Corporal punishment needs to be used to set an example for others that once you are caught you will not simply live in a nice jail cell or be executed.

PS I think many of the thousands of victims of crime, you know those people we rarely focus on, would be more than happy to do it.

They were underage and arguably mentally disturbed as a result of abusive upbringings. Doesn't excuse the crime - but I'm not sure you should pretend that this is some sort of common occurrence. Far from it. The fact that they were "kids" plays very much into the public reaction to that crime. Hasn't been so much public outrage to a crime since Myra Hindley and Ian Brady committed child murder in the 1960's.

And no - I don't know where they are now. Though there were rumours that they were sent to Australia. Believe it or not...

Sounds like the implementation of Sharia Law in Saudi Arabia. Perhaps you should convert and emigrate...

Judges are free to impose capital punishment or corporal punishment, including amputations of hands and feet for certain crimes such as murder, robbery, rape, drug smuggling and for various forms of sexual behaviour such as homosexuality and adultery. The courts may impose less severe punishments, such as floggings, for less serious crimes against public morality such as drunkenness.

The punishments, especially the executions, are carried out in public in order to add humiliation to the convicted person and also to act as a deterrence. Judges are generally given a tremendous amount of discretion in deciding how to punish a particular individual, and will make such decisions based on the particular school of Islam that they follow. For example;

Theft is punishable by the amputation of the right hand, unless the thief is poor and the stolen money is from public sources or a company (i.e. the thief is a well-off adult who stole private, secure money). If the right hand has already been amputated, the left hand is chosen instead.

Drinking, selling, or buying alcohol and sniffing drugs or injecting drugs is punished by a sentence of eighty lashes. Smuggling heroin or cocaine into the country is punished by death (beheading with a sword).

Fornication is normally punished with 40 lashes. During flogging, the face, head and vital organs of the person are protected.

Rape can only be proven by the testimony of four male witnesses. If rape is not proven to have been committed, the accused is generally charged with adultery, which is punishable by death by stoning if the accused was married, and by flogging if the accused was single.

Murder, accidental death and bodily harm are open to punishment from the victim's family. Retribution may be sought in kind or through blood money. The blood money payable for a woman's accidental death is half as much as that for a man. The main reason for this is that, according to Islamic law, men are expected to be providers for their families and therefore are expected to earn more money in their lifetimes. The blood money from a man would be expected to sustain his family, for at least a short time. Honor killings are also not punished as severely as murder. This generally stems from the fact that honor killings are within a family, and done to compensate for some dishonorable act committed.

:o What ever happened to being a responsible parent

That was dropped after the 60's.

Now it's up to society to take care of people's kids.
