I didn't think anyone was arguing...

*hugs*

I'd just like to see people getting what they need from Captain's data collecting, that's all. As bszoom says, he's not going to be able to manage it forever.

I participated in a 'user operated' list when we were filing. We called it "London Interviews" or something like that. When someone sent in P3, they were added to the list. When they got their interview, they were moved to the month the interview was to occur. IMO a thread operated in that manner - by users - WAS a true comraderie thread. We weren't trying to predict anything - just sticking together and cheering each other on.

I would be happy to improve the visualization of the timeline data. If we want more/less information or the way it is displayed changed let me know :).

Maybe you and bszoon could get your little geek heads together?

PS - Geekiness is sexy. I'm married to one.

I thought we'd discussed these tracking threads ad nauseaum - and any of us who felt they were getting to be a bit absurd were told that instead, we were absurd for thinking such.

Leave them just as they are and let the timelines do what they're already doing.

It seems to be what most people want.

I would simply prefer to see Admin take the reins back regarding collection of data. I don't believe it is our place to do that. It is our place, however, to ask Admin to re-evaluate the information they are giving us if it not serving members needs.

Tracy-

We have & I'm sure it'll resurface again. It's just that Lal did bring it up last week & it's very obviously needs help. I made the graphics to further (easily) illustrate that.

It has been made clear that no one cares that much about it to do anything about it - they'll think on it, per the usual on VJ. Discuss an issue that needs help & then admin will mull it over. Then, do nothing.

Also, no one seems to care to rein in tracking threads either, no matter how much misinformation gets spread. The worst part is that the VJ timelines are not getting the help/input they need. They should be the #1 resource, not #4 or 5 (after monthly/weekly/minute tracking threads). That only hurts VJ as a whole, as a resource...

I raised the issue, and I was told I fixed it (post 2). Obviously I didn't. My (thankless) work here is done. :(

Let's face it, dev - making suggestions goes nowhere. Its becoming too predictable - someone makes a suggestion, the naysayers arrive and say what a ####### idea it is, others try to defend the person for at least having the balls to suggest something (and actually try and IMPROVE the site), then the OP and the defenders get ridiculed for the 'silly' suggestion (or supporting it) and are also told that things are fine at VJ just the way they are, dammit, so just let it be, etc and so on. Rinse, lather and repeat.

The phrase 'banging your head against a brick wall' seems average, overused and droll, but is actually the most accurate statement to describe the situation.

There is no point in trying anymore.

I have moved about 20 or so topics from the last ten days in the progress report forum. They should now be in the right forums. Tracy, we do make changes based on suggestions but in general we do not want to make rash decisions to change things based on limited feedback. We prefer to hear all sides. Both new and old members alike have valid points of view. The internet evolves and so does the site from month to month and through the years. The 'progress report' forum never existed until members started to enjoy the social elements of creating such threads. When there were tons of similar threads I agreed with the community to create the new forum. I want to do the best I can for the site and all members but nothing will ever be perfect. As for combining the threads that are in that forum I am not sure on what to do. Imposing and/or forcing people to change the threads is not the right solution. Hard call.

As for the timelines. I am very open to making changes that make sense. Just let me know. A thread last month resulted in me making several changes to the timeline system. There can be improvements still so I would appreciate any feedback that contains practical improvements and ways to simplify the presentation.

If people keeping their timelines updated (as well as participating in the 'progress forum') is a concern I have taken a proactive step to post a reminder at the top of that forum. You can see the annoucement here:

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...ounce&id=14

I have two 'self help' videos to show people how to create and also edit VJ timelines :).

I completely agree with that, and no one can say that there have not been ANY changes made based on suggestions.

However, I've seen some threads lately where a member posts a well meaning suggestion and its nearly a fight to see who can get in there first and denegrade the idea. Personally, if I came up with a new idea for the site, I'd rather send a PM with suggestions (to you, Ewok, or you and all the mods). Then one of you guys could pitch the idea on the open forum. I doubt you'd be picked apart for it.

And on the subject of these 'filer' threads in particular, it seems quite apparent that folks want things to stay as is - and to suggest otherwise is futile.

Thus, I see nothing wrong with having 15 of them about nearly the same topic.

Capn, no one will bother with that. No offense, but it's true. You can see why in the multiple exact same tracker threads. If you choose not to merge them, it will only get worse. There is no control in those threads/forums. Hence, my visual by months. People would rather reply in 3 May filer threads + CSC filer thread than bother to update their Vj timeline. If you merged them, at least information would stay in ONE thread instead of 3.

How many threads on the EXACT SAME SUBJECTS -over a 4 month period - will warrant change then?

Also, every time there is a thread on change in here, it gets locked....? Tracy, you are correct, change is futile.

And my graphic shows there were 18 wrongly placed threads in the first 36 threads yesterday. It's not being maintained daily, which is what it needs to work.

Well as I stated, I did move the threads that should be in other forums. I agree merging threads may make some sense in done right. Hard to do though. As to the things you think are all 'wrong'; are there any things that you think are done right? Kind of frustrating when most your comments are critical of one thing or another. I appreciate your thoughts and do make changes when it makes sense but I would love to know also when things work well too so that I know that they are useful.

Not much has been good lately, Capn. Many people have said as much, not just me. Look around - it is what it is. A member(with previous problems) is completely insulting to a long standing very well informed member & that thread gets shut down, for some supposed TOS violation - but it was never explained. Yet in OT there are 3 separate threads about cheating on wives/husbands/vodka bottles. And a troll that is allowed to go on for 20+ pages....???? There is no control, anywhere.

I took the time to go thru that forum, make 2 easily read graphics & a post about it - FOR THE GOOD OF VJ, I might add. You ignored/misread my initial post & never corrected yourself. You ignored my post with the graphics. I'm trying to bring VJ back to where it was easily read & informative. It's not anymore, that is clear as can be.

I used to move a lot of threads Capn, DAILY, but I gave up my position for various reasons. If Organizers are not moving threads daily, in all forums, there is not much point to having them, is there? I saw 18 wrongly posted threads out of 36, in one day. That is a big problem. I'm not saying their posts are wrong, please don't put words in my mouth. Wrongly posted, yes.

If we need to police better incorrectly posted threads (location) then that is a good comment to know. I will spread the word. Also while some posts may appear as spam to some others may not see it that way. I often get a reported thread that seems like it might be bad just to find 50 other members that have posted there and had no problem with it. Fine line to walk and generally I try to do what I think the community as a whole finds to be appropriate when it comes to certain types of threads.
