Hello everyone! Just lately, my fiancee and I were talking about health/medical insurance coverage for her. I have one thru my employer and have to renew this coming month. She is currently employed and has hers to in the Philippines and possibly still covered even when she comes here but worst case, hers may not cover her needs while away from the Phils. I just want to ensure that she is covered upon her entry into the US on K1 visa until I can declare her as family in my employer-sponsored insurance. How are your fiance/es' medical/health insurance handled? Or is there a way fiancee can be included in my current insurance?

If you plan to get married soon after she arrives, I wouldn't worry about getting short term insurance. That is, assuming she is healthy and doesn't have any pre-exsiting medical conditions. Once you are married, you can add her to your plan.

Look into purchasing some sort of 'travel' insurance. Technically, she is a visitor (non-immigrant visa) until either her I-94 (90 days) is passed and she leaves the US, or you marry and apply for AOS. You could argue that if you didn't get married, then she would return home, so until you actually do marry, she is only temporarily allowed in the US. That is the time period you are interested in covering. Hopefully you won't need it but if you do, it would be good to have.

My employment insurance covered me for 30 days after my last day of work - she might want to check and see what her situation is. Check with your insurer too - they may allow you to add your fiancee at your annual renewal/change date although they may insist you wait until you are actually married.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I also bought a travellers insurance policy, which covered only major medical. When she had a minor illness, I took her to an Urgicenter.

Want one more example?

I arrived in April on K-1, one way ticket, with travel insurance for 3 months. We planned wedding right at the end of 90 day period thus 3 months cover. Thankfully I didn't need it.

Got married July 1. Next day my new husband added me to his health insurance :) I still don't have EAD and don't know if I will get my own health cover when I start working but... plenty of time to decide on that one!

Blessings on your journey!
