I am so used to Europe and Canada when I always kept foreign funds in accounts,

what did you do?

I need to be able to have a checking in canadian dollars.

I will not change my money in US now!

what are my options?

I believe Commerce Bank accepts foreign funds, but I think there's a fee with that. I think TD Bank North can accept Canadian funds, but I'd call to confirm that. My wife and I had checks from TD Canada Trust and I called TD Bank North if they would accept them. They said I'd have to have an account, then the check would be sent to Canada to clear, or something like that. I would call around and ask though. Don't take my word for it.

I ended up keeping my Canadian account open at BMO and transfer funds to my US account using http://www.customhouse.com. My sister has my ATM card and deposits any Canadian cheques for me.

Others will chime in with different ideas, but for me this was the easiest option for me.

We are going to try Royal Bank's option. You open a cheqing account with Royal Bank and then open an account with Centura's Access USA (linked to Royal bank). You are then able to transfer money from one account to the other. (USA to Canada or visa versa) I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for. We just barely opened these accounts so I don't have a lot of experience.

thank you all,

I will try all these options. I basicaly want to keep the canadian funds and have access to them instead of crossing the border all the time for some cash

I know the US dollar is declining and canadian is wining on this market... so what is the use of me buying the weaker currency?

thank you again.

if any other ideas I am opened.

it helps a lot!

Yep.. I have my CIBC account still open and all CDN money from b'days etc, get deposited into that account (i've also mailed checks to my branch as well).. then I use Custom House EFT transfers to get the money back and forth - totally easy, totally fast 3-4 days and totally FREE!!! Yippee!! (Takes a bit to set up everything with Custom House so give yourself a week or two to get the account ready to go btw).

I originally had and still have BMO. I'll keep those accounts open and my sister can deposit things if I have to.

I opened a new account with RBC Royal Bank (CA) and RBC Centura (US) last week..very easy and you can transfer funds between.

Yes, I kept a TD Bank account open and set up for internet banking and use a Visa card that I can pay off through the Canadian bank account online. I can access it for cash in Canada if I wish, can write cheques on it or use it to pay off the credit card that I can use either here or in Canada. Basically, it is an account to accept Canadian funds since my main account is the US one my husband and I have here in the States.

I'm pretty sure CIBC does this too now. You can have an American and Canadian account with them.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard
