Also, what he mentioned about a restraining order is very believable in my opinion, incase anyone wants to doubt that. It's not that hard to get a restraining order against someone.

I have at no point doubed that she may have taken out a restraining order against him. I have voiced doubts that his account of events is accurate. It's quite possible that he thought he'd import himself a know nothing little sex toy to play with as he pleases. That he indeed mistreated her (maybe he got tired of her and wanted to just get rid of her) and that she took protective action against this sorry ####### upon consulting with the Ethiopian Community Council in Chicago. Not saying it is so but for the "give the benefit of a doubt" crowd, give the alien spouse that benefit, too. You're only hearing one side of the story. And that one side has many holes in it as I have pointed out above.

I've been around Ethiopians for good long while and this story just makes no sense whatsoever. I am not saying that no Ethiopians would cheat their way into the US. I know better than that. But she'd be a very unique piece of work to pull something like that off.

And he still couldn't explain how he ventured into the US Consulate to obtain the required "free to marry" certificate, how he got that certificate authenticated at the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, how he took that now authenticated certificate to the Municipality to file for his marriage, how he sat down with his bride, at least four witnesses and an officer entering into the marriage not knowing that he was entering into a marriage. The very first part of that process is done exculsively in English as it is done at the US Consulate in Addis where the Ethiopian spouse to be is not even present as (s)he is made to wait outside the Consulate. And how he did not make out the Marriage Certificate as such even if is called just that - in plain English no less - right between the pictures of the bride and groom that are affixed to the Marriage Certificate.

Any way you slice this, it doesn't add up.

On the nail that the OP's story didn't add up; we'd have heard about it from the media sharks (and not from VJ) if it did. So, the OP is either a troll or a jotun (grossly magnified version of a troll).

Now, he could be lying about that, or he could have been fooled by his fiancee with a fake marriage certificate, ´cus if it´s true she did that, she could do a bit worse as well, no?

An Ethiopian gal that just wants to marry some sucker to come here, doesn't go off on fake marriage certificates or silly ####### like that. She'd come here, cut-n-run first chance she's got and won't ever be seen again. Estimates have it that there are upwards of 120K Ethiopians in the DC area alone. There's jobs and shelter and whatnot w/o any need for any papers. Going after half the suckers stuff and running the risk of being kicked back after having prostituted herself for a ticket to the US? Nah. Not habesha style.

Yes, there is a lot of Ethiopian's here in the Maryland,DC,Virgina area. at my last job, 90 percent of the people where Ethiopian's.

Take care

We all know that. The OP didn't know they were officially married. He thought his ceremony was just an engagement ceremony. It's happened before here on VJ. I had a ceremony I wasn't sure about. It turns out it was just an engagement ceremony.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

CALLED FROM WORK ONE DAY OVER AND OVER AGAIN, WENT HOME, SHE WAS NOT THERE. ETC ETC, WENT TO THE POLICE, SHE ACCUSED ME OF BEATING HERE. GOT THROWN IN JAIL FOR LIKE 3 DAYS. WENT TO COURT ON THE LAST DAY, NOT FOUND GUILTY.

Ok so you were in jail for 'like' 3 days? Then they had a trial on the last day and found you not guilty? Boy the American Justice system is speeeeeeedyyyy.

I don't know why that says code I think i screwed up lol

In Illinois how it works is that if you are accused of beating your spouse and the police have any slight inclination to believe the person was abused (and the person does not even have to file charges) you will be arrested and will be ordered to stay away from the home for 72 hours = 3 days. If you are not bailed out of jail you will have to remain in jail for the full three days you are ordered to stay away from the home. The court on the last day would have been for the release, and if there was no evidence he would have been released. Just because he doesn't know the full legal reasons doesn't mean he's lying. *shrugs*

Getting a restraining order is remarkably easy. You go to the state's attorney, file the motion (for free I might add) and then you get a temp restraining order "emergency order" without the other party even being there or being informed. That is good for 30 days and then you will have the hearing for the 2 year order, which the person being accused will be summoned to be at. At that time the judge will hear the specifics of the case and either grant or deny the order.

If you want to go down that road: The point you're missing is that she can't deny knowing that she was indeed married. That would put her into a position where she can't stay here - whether she's a victim of abuse or not. The USCIS is kind of funny that way. They see a married person entering as a K1 and that's that. She wouldn't have a leg to stand on as she would have declared at the US Consulate at the time of her K1 interview that she was, indeed, eligible to marry her petitioner which she would have known good and well to be untrue. Case closed. Alien gone. ;)

And I notice no one else even commented on the fact of first hearing about it on VJ (too sensational to NOT have been in the media already).

He is not a troll. He is my best friend for over 30 years. I have personally watched this whole drama unfold.

You should be thanking him for providing a much needed caution regarding this issue. He didn't have to post. I told him he should in order to make people aware of this type of activity.

Hindsight is 20/20 and the fact of the matter is that I viewed these boards before, during, and after his situation. Sure, he could have been more cautious. But, some of the same people on this forum that would criticize his actions today supported them in the past. Shameful.

Instead of turning this man into an enemy and shunning him, you should be helping him out and supporting him through this trying time. I am sure that if it were you, you would see things much differently.

I don't know what it is about the internet that turns normally decent people into #######. Perhaps it's the anonymity and lack of physical contact.

B)

Now, for those of you thinking about taking this course of action regarding a future wife. Just take this info in the spirit it was intended, as a caution. I think that meeting a woman like this is cool. It's not for me, but I don't see any problems with it. Just beware of this loophole that the lawyers have created. Honestly, you could get into just much trouble living with a woman for 7+ years in some states only to find out your common law married, so it's just a risk like any other IMO.

And those of you who are already married (why you still post here I have no idea), stop being so damn defensive. It's not like a mob of people are going to come to your house with pitch forks and demand the blood of your beloved foreign wife. Geez... get a grip. Stop doing this: :crying:

There is so much hostility here. It's really sad. Give the guy the benefit of the doubt. I read his account twice. I think he could be telling the truth.

Look, there are MILLIONS of pople who will do almost anything to get into the US. It's a simple fact. This guys story is nothing compared to some I have read in my local newspaper.

So cut him some slack already. No need to chop his head off just because you don't want to admit that this sh!t happens (a lot).
