Why is there any kind of a certificate at all for just an engagement? In Vietnam we have engagement ceremonies that feel a lot like marriages, but there is no certificate.

S&S made the point that I am thinking. It sounds like even IF this was an actual marriage, isn't it visa fraud because you came over on a K-1?

Thing is that going to the municipality to get married is referred to as an engagement in Ethiopia. The act of getting married is the large ceremony w/o any actual certificates. The certificate that the municipality issues, however, clearly states "Marriage Certificate" no matter what the locals call it. And it is a legal marriage certificate.

And yes, the K1 entry would be deemed invalid if the alien was married when entering on it.

The whole story just doesn't add up.

I am not saying that it is impossible that someone gets taken for a ride by an Ethiopian. That is known to have happened. Many times, I'm sure. In fact, I personally met Ethiopians years ago that, according to community accounts, made it here just that way. But this particular story still reeks of BS.

Sure, it could be an elaborate setup, but I'd give him the benefit of the doubt.

For the reading-comprehension challenged, he did not think he was married.

Also, what he mentioned about a restraining order is very believable in my opinion, incase anyone wants to doubt that. It's not that hard to get a restraining order against someone. A good friend of mine got into a relationship with a guy who was usually nice but sometimes would act strange, we noticed it from the beginning. They never admitted that they were "dating" always claiming they were good friends...none of us believed it of course. Well one night they had a huge argument...this guy is really tall and muscular and big, and my friend is petite and little and short...and in their argument she threw an empty laundry basket across his living room. Guess what, he took her to court and got a restraining order on her...saying he feared for his life around her. Give me a break...he's a big guy, he's just crazy. So my friend who you'd never expect to have a restraining order put on her has one and it shocked all of us and hurt her emotionally badly. Recently it was ammended by the court, I went to the court house with her as support, and it's not as bad as it first was. But let me tell you, I wanted to hit the guy myself.

Anyway if he's a troll, I don't care. I don't think he is though. But whatever...skeptics will be skeptics

There's always the benefit of the doubt, y'know...

To the OP, I'm sorry that things didn't work out the way you planned. So you were a little naiive going into this - I was too. Luckily, I married a good man and couldn't be happier, but I know a lot of marriages don't work out for whatever reason. Good luck going forward with your life.

I have at no point doubed that she may have taken out a restraining order against him. I have voiced doubts that his account of events is accurate. It's quite possible that he thought he'd import himself a know nothing little sex toy to play with as he pleases. That he indeed mistreated her (maybe he got tired of her and wanted to just get rid of her) and that she took protective action against this sorry ####### upon consulting with the Ethiopian Community Council in Chicago. Not saying it is so but for the "give the benefit of a doubt" crowd, give the alien spouse that benefit, too. You're only hearing one side of the story. And that one side has many holes in it as I have pointed out above.

I've been around Ethiopians for good long while and this story just makes no sense whatsoever. I am not saying that no Ethiopians would cheat their way into the US. I know better than that. But she'd be a very unique piece of work to pull something like that off.

And he still couldn't explain how he ventured into the US Consulate to obtain the required "free to marry" certificate, how he got that certificate authenticated at the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, how he took that now authenticated certificate to the Municipality to file for his marriage, how he sat down with his bride, at least four witnesses and an officer entering into the marriage not knowing that he was entering into a marriage. The very first part of that process is done exculsively in English as it is done at the US Consulate in Addis where the Ethiopian spouse to be is not even present as (s)he is made to wait outside the Consulate. And how he did not make out the Marriage Certificate as such even if is called just that - in plain English no less - right between the pictures of the bride and groom that are affixed to the Marriage Certificate.

Any way you slice this, it doesn't add up.
