I also understood he got her a plane ticket to send her home, since they didn´t get married within the 90 day period.

And I understood that until she waved a marriage certificate in front of him, he didn´t know his engagement was an actual marriage.

Now, in Brasil that would be impossible as you´re not married until you sign the marriage registry, so unless he signed something, he´s not married.

Now, he could be lying about that, or he could have been fooled by his fiancee with a fake marriage certificate, ´cus if it´s true she did that, she could do a bit worse as well, no?

I knew this would happen. I’m just a nice guy. I went on here because my friend said I should do the right thing and warn other people what happened to me. Sure enough, I do it, and of course just like I expected I get bashed. I said it from my first statement there would be backlash from everyone. Darnit people can’t you take something at face value and except it.

SHONJAVED!!! Do I have to spell it out to you? HERE:

I applied for the K1 VISA.

you cant apply for a K-1 visa if you are married DUH...

If you read correctly: I SAID AT THE TIME I DIDN’T KNOW I WAS MARRIED. I WAS TOLD I WAS ENGAGED!!!!!

don’t marry within 90 days, the person must return to their home country.

I thought you were married???????????????????????????????

AGAIN IF YOU READ CORRECTLY: I SAID SHE CAME HERE THINGS DIDN’T WORK OUT. AT THAT TIME I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION I WAS ENGAGED!! IT WASN’T UNTILL SHE THREW ME IN JAIL. THEN 2 OR SO MONTHS LATER I WENT TO COURT BECAUSE SHE GOT A RETRAINING ORDER AGAINST ME SHE TOLD THE COURT I’M MARRIED TO HIM.

So I purchased a ticket and one day when I was at work

ACTUALLY I PURCHASED THE PLANE TICKET BEFORE SHE THREW ME IN JAIL. THAT WAS WHY SHE DID IT. BECAUSE SHE KNEW SHE WAS GOING HOME SO HER LAST RESORT WAS TO THROW ME IN JAIL, AND START THE SELF PETETION PROCESS.

whats the ticket for? not wanting to marry your wife?

NO, THINGS DIDN’T WORK OUT. VERY SIMPLE. DON’T WORRY WHY THAT IS NOT THE REASON OF MY POST. THE REASON IT DON’T GET SCAMED.

isn't it illegal for her to come here on a k-1 when she knew she was married? I'm surprised the court didn't realise that if she came on k-1 you both couldn't have been married in ethiopia. If she never adjusted then wouldn't she still have to go home- i don't see how she could still stay here

If you can't tell that an Ethiopian Marriage Certificate is a Marriage Certificate, then you're an illiterate moron, my friend. Because the Marriage Certificate states just that on it's face: "Marriage Certificate". In English.

How do I know? I've got one from when I married my wife there over 2.5 years ago.

Off to Trollwood you go now. Go on! ;)

When you get married don't you have to sign a document? I would think it would be kind of hard to get married without knowing it.

See my post above yours. ;)

Just to deconstruct the OP's funny story some more: As a spouse, she wouldn't be eligible to enter on a K1 and then stay. Her entry would be deemed illegal if she came on a fiance(e) visa knwoing good and well that she was indeed your spouse. Even if you didn't know, she can hardly claim she didn't then and only realized it later. You're pretty full of yourself, buddy.

It should state in english what it is as well as ethiopian. and if you cant read something DONT sign it, thats advice for the future.

This story is BS. Just came to think of it, here's what else is needed to get married in Ethiopia:

Marriage information: Consular officer issues a free to marry document for a U.S. Citizen or a legal permanent resident. Then the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs should authenticate the document so that the local municipality office accepts the free to marry document.

A fee of $30 or the equivalent in local currency should be paid for notary and any other document execution.

US Consulate Addis Ababa - Services for American Citizens

To be sure, one has to go to the US Consulate and obtain a "free to marry" certificate that then has to be taken to the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be authenticated. With this authenticated document, one can go to the Local Governernment to get married to an Ethiopian citizen.

But maybe they drugged him up and he doesn't remember none of this. Or maybe he was just too horny to care.

Alot of counties require you to get that unmarreid document before you can marry in thier country. I had to get one when i was in tbilisi. I had to go to the us embassy and get it done. We never got married becouse of other circumstances but i still needed it in order to get married if i did. The paper was at least good proof that i had visited georgia at that time if anything.

An Ethiopian gal that just wants to marry some sucker to come here, doesn't go off on fake marriage certificates or silly ####### like that. She'd come here, cut-n-run first chance she's got and won't ever be seen again. Estimates have it that there are upwards of 120K Ethiopians in the DC area alone. There's jobs and shelter and whatnot w/o any need for any papers. Going after half the suckers stuff and running the risk of being kicked back after having prostituted herself for a ticket to the US? Nah. Not habesha style.

Why is there any kind of a certificate at all for just an engagement? In Vietnam we have engagement ceremonies that feel a lot like marriages, but there is no certificate.

S&S made the point that I am thinking. It sounds like even IF this was an actual marriage, isn't it visa fraud because you came over on a K-1?
