[source] Should illegal aliens' children continue to be granted citizenship if born the United States?

Congressman Nathan Deal doesn't think so and is sponsoring the 'The Birthright Citizenship Act of 2007.'

The bill center's on amending Section One of the Fourteenth Amendment which currently allows any child born in the United States to be granted citizenship - even if the parent's have come to the country illegally.

Dalton citizens have mixed reactions to the proposed bill.

"I don't think the child should be..if the parents are illegal then the parents are illegal," Karen Granger, a Dalton citizen, says.

"Children don't ask to be born into this world..and they're not aware of even their surroundings when they're born and they're not even aware what country they're a citizen of," Brian Suits, Principal of Dalton Middle School, says.

If passed, the bill will require parents either to be U.S. citizens, or to be an alien who has been lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the U.S., or an alien performing active service in the armed forces.

Birthright Citizenship Act of 2007 (HR 1940) Has 57 Co-Sponsors Bug Your Congressman To Sign On

By Digger

Time to push for some serious reform and that could start with the end of the abuse of the 14th amendment to the Constitution that is currently being used to allow children of illegal aliens to be born American citizens.

The fact of the matter is that if the parents are illegal aliens and they sneaked into this country illegally, then they are criminals and should be deported. Just because they happen to have a baby here should not give that baby automatic US citizenship which then allows the parents to claim hardship for legal status and allows them to obtain millions of taxpayer dollars in services for their anchor baby.

The 14th amendment was introduced into the Constitution to allow slaves to become US citizens after the emancipation. Since then it has been misused for decades to allow literally millions of illegal alien anchor babies - and their illegal parents and families - to remain in this country.

So far HR 1940, the Birthright Citizenship Act of 2007 introduced in April, 2007 to end the practice of abuse of birthright citizenship, has 57 cosponsors. It was introduced by Representative Nathan Deal of Georgia.

Below are the current co-sponsors of the Birthright Citizenship Act of 2007. If you don't see your representative on this list call toll free at the congressional switchboard ( 1-866-340-9281 ) and urge them to sign on. It's an issue the illegal alien cheerleading squad wishes would go away.

The fact is that the illegal alien cheerleaders use it as their "anchor baby" agenda to push the notion that immigration laws don't apply to illegal aliens as long as they can give birth on US soil. To say this isn't so is an outright deception to put it mildly.

In a modern welfare state that borders a Third World country...this is total insanity. People are beginning to wake up. It is a huge magnet and incentive for illegal aliens to break the law. And they do by the hundreds of thousands!

A vast majority of mature First World countries have done away with the archaic notion of automatic birthright citizenship for illegal aliens long ago for obvious reasons. Isn't it about time that the USA moves into the 21st Century and faces modern realities without bleeding heart notions that are not in the best interests of America and the vast majority of Americans?

I say YES!

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

The anchor baby hand-wringing is really dumb. Look, the activist woman LOST her case. It's well known that having an American baby doesn't preclude the parents form being deported. Having a kid here does not mean you get to stay.

So what can the anchor baby do.....Which means your Mexican anchor baby born today, let's see. 21 years before she's able to petition for legal residence for her parents... a quick look at the website a couple days ago told me parents' petitions from Mexico had a backlog back to 1991 iirc.... so, let's assume that continues, so 21 years for a baby born today, 16 years for the petition, plus a year for waiver for EWI.....

About 38 years? That's the huge incentive? More so than the economic opportunities?

You could get rid of birthright citizenship tomorrow and it would not change a damned thing about illegal immigration. Except now there'd be NO reason to bother integrating with whole generations of people being practically stateless.

It's nice political sabre-rattling, preserve America against the hordes coming here, but to see it as a solution is to really misunderstand the problem.

There you go again! I am not anti-immigrant, just anti-illegal immigrant. Thats a label that your side uses to try to demonize those that want the law respected. Sorry, it just doesn't fly anymore. The racism, anti-immigrant accusations that some here use is insulting and are not tolerated by me. There is a way to make anchor babies no longer automatic citizens without a change in the constitution. I fully support this idea and it should be brought before the congress.

In 1898, the Supreme Court in United States v. Wong Kim Ark declared that the Fourteenth Amendment adopted the common-law definition of birthright citizenship. Chief Justice Melville W. Fuller’s dissenting opinion, however, argued that birthright citizenship had been repealed by the principles of the American Revolution and rejected by the framers of the Fourteenth Amendment. Nonetheless, the decision conferred birthright citizenship on a child of legal residents of the United States. Although the language of the majority opinion in Wong Kim Ark is certainly broad enough to include the children born in the United States of illegal as well as legal immigrants, there is no case in which the Supreme Court has explicitly held that this is the unambiguous command of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Based on the intent of the framers of the Fourteenth Amendment, some believe that Congress could exercise its Section 5 powers to prevent the children of illegal aliens from automatically becoming citizens of the United States. An effort in 1997 failed in the face of intense political opposition from immigrant rights groups. Apparently, the question remains open to the determination of the political and legal processes.

Could-a-fooled me! The anchor baby cheerleaders are still trying to weasel her back to the USA with an ambassadorship and plenty of sabre rattling by the Mexican government.

Stateless? How about the nationality of their parents?

Do you think a baby born to American parents at a hospital in Saudi Arabia is a Saudi citizen? I'll give you three guesses and the first three don't count. ;)

I just feel sorry for the kids. Lots of people on this forum point to a 1 year old born in the US from an illegal mother and say,"you are just as illegal as the next guy"...

No one seems to care about the kids. They don't get to choose anything, their parents or their parents choices. So I just feel bad for them.

As someone said, the constitution will not be changed.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

third world/anchor babies. spit and blather of xenophobes. calling like it is.

you and your brethen have an opinion. good. now try changing the constitution. good luck.

Daniel

:energetic:

Stop calling me a xenophobe! Your insults just show how weak your argument is. Calling someone a xenophobe who has a wife from another country on a immigration board is the hight of stupidity. The constitution doesn't need to be changed. We have seen time and again that all it takes is the supreme court to "interpret" the constitution in a different way. God willing that is something that will happen.

There you go again! I am not anti-immigrant, just anti-illegal immigrant. Thats a label that your side uses to try to demonize those that want the law respected.

You mean kind of like the label "Illegal Immigrant Cheerleading Squad"?
