FWIW, the problem identified on the China aircraft that caused the fire has prompted the FAA to issue an airworthiness directive to all US airlines to inspect all 737-600 and higher for the same condition. Apparently the same condition with the forward slats potentially puncturing fuel tanks has occured in the US but thankfully without such devastating results....

Isn't China Air Taiwanese? Air China is the PRC national carrier - I always get them mixed up.

China Airlines is owned indirectly by the Chinese Government. EVA air is the only private major carrier in Taiwan (Owned by the worldwide freight company, Evergreen Group)

And here I am already apprehensive I am flying TAM, through São Paulo, in October. I'm usually not scared of flying but lately there's been so many things going on in Brazil I am scared, and seeing accidents before an upcoming trip is not very reassuring.

To add clarification or perhaps more confusion, I believe that China Airlines is indirectly owned by The Republic of China ( ROC or Taiwan) and not the PRC (Peoples Republic of China) which is mainland China. But then again it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.

You are correct

From wikipedia:

The airline is not state-owned but belongs to China Aviation Development Foundation (中華航空事業發展基金會). However, the foundation belongs to the government of the Republic of China. The chairman does not have to report to the Legislative Yuan, unlike other state-owned companies in Taiwan.

Oh, thank you for that. I really should learn to do searches before I post. From personal experience, I would never ever fly China Airlines but I have flown several times on Air China and always have received excellent treatment and good flights. I also believe their accident record is excellent and code share with many airlines.

I flew with these guys a few years ago. Put it this way, I forfeit my return flight and flew back with qantas.

Then again in all fairness there seems to be an issue with 737, in general, if the FAA is calling for an urgent inspection of planes..
