So I am dabbling a bit in making my own cross stitch designs. I don't know if they are any good, but it's been fun trying to put ideas down on paper.

Anyways!

So I finished this one today -- I see possibly making a pillow out of it. It's not quite done -- I think I may put some lettering as well. I had to capture the image on PhotoShop, so it's not the greatest image, but I would love any feedback as far how it looks overall, etc. pretty please :)

wait a sec -- it would help to upload the pic LOLpillow.bmp

I like it to Cassie.

I think a pillow would be nice with that design on it.

thanks :) My question is -- are the lines in the background too much? I was trying to give the effect of a barn wall in the background, can't tell if it's too distracting or not.

Actually I was going to comment on those...I like them. They're not straight, so it gives it a very...looking for a word here...I want to say rural or rustic (not quite either) look. Not polished, like a stable shouldn't be polished.

I thought they added an interesting visual to it. I can't imagine it being as interesting without them.

Yeah, it would be quite plain without them. I might change those stitches into back stitching, so that the lines aren't so overpowering, but you still get the effect, you know?

Oh, I'll keep fiddling with it! :)

You designed that yourself! Wow! I'm impressed, and it would be great as a pillow. I've done cross stitch, but never crossed my mind to design. Good job!

I like it alot! I have a question though....do you know where I can find patterns for the Nova Scotia flag and the French Acadian flag?

hmm, i haven't seen any myself, but hey I could try! What kind of flags are you looking for? And what size? The Acadian flag is pretty straightforward, but the NS one would present a bit of a challenge...... :)

I'll do a search to see if there is any out there before trying to do it myself :)

Are you using a software program and if so, which one? I've been looking into designing my own things for a bit but can't decide on the software.

As for the backstitching...if you do that on single thread it might make it too 'fine' if you know what I mean. I know I'm going by a picture of the design so I don't know if it looks different when you're designing it...but I thought the "walls" were okay sized for this. (Might just be a perspective/taste thing.)

How difficult is it to give us a picture of the walls as backstitches for comparison? If it's a lot of work, don't, but I'd be interested to see the difference if there is one. :)

*watches you fiddle and wonders how you'll be able to cross stitch while playing music* :P

edited because I have the spellling skills of a turnip this morning. ;)

I used to latch hook as well. I was pre-teen and my aunt always called it "hooking" and asked me if my "hooking" was going well. I was old enough to get the joke. ;)

Anyway, had to stop because I too went OCD and my hands were chewed up from the canvas...that stuff is rough!

The design is good!

I thought the lines were Christmas lights. (DUH!!! No lights in the Nativity scene!) If you backstitch them they will look more like the walls. I say keep em!

Instead of a pillow though, I suggest a wall hanging. My mom has something like this with an old piece of wood at the top and barbed-wire hanging the fabric.

Have fun!

Right now, I am using a version of CrossStitch Pro that I downloaded to try it out (test version) before I went and spent the money on it. I have also been charting some very simple things by hand on graph paper, but I have to say that I love using the software -- much easier to erase mistakes! :) I wanted to hold off on purchasing it until I knew that I would use it, that it would be easy to use, etc.

Now the problem is, since I am not using a full version of the software, I can't save my work *cries* So I can't go back and change the design yet to see what it would be like with backstitching or long stitching for the barn wall. I've captured the image to recreate it once I buy the software though, and I will definitely try it out. Methinks I'll probably keep it as it is, but who knows? :) I won't really know until I stitch one up and see what it looks like. If I backstitch it using 2 threads instead of the traditional one, it may show up better, don't know.

Slim -- a wall hanging is a great idea! If I decide to keep on doing this and producing more designs as a business, showing the finished products in a couple of different ways is good. I'll have to try it that way as well. :)

Thank you everyone, I really do appreciate the feedback. :) I've attached the last image I took of it (there are a few little changes from the first one).

PS. Cerise, I fiddle with my toes :P

Here's the final version of it that I saved (a couple minor changes)
