I worked on a temporary NIN for almost two years; no one even asked; filed tax returns, changed jobs, the lot... it was a bit stupid and lazy of me not to get a permanent one earlier, but I'd been told it didn't make any difference (and certainly that was my experience; it didn't seem to)

finally got the real one last year, and that wasn't a hassle either... I'm always hesitant to say I'm SURE about anything but that 'no temporary NINs anymore' sounds like poppycock to me ;)

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

You may think its poppycock but that was the lastest information that was issued by the DWP in 2005... all temp NINO's were made up of letters and your date of birth... now all NINO are issued from a central computer system and it will not allow the input of random numbers....

As for working without a NINO you may well be able to do it but the employer is not ment to employ you without it.... having a NINO or not will not affect the tax you pay... unless you have a P45 then any new employer will deduct tax at the emergency rate until the tax office tells them via a P86 what you tax code is...

I moved here from Irelandin 2005, got a proper NI number, and for some reason (mix up with P45's) was given a temporary NI number in 2006 when I started with a new employer. It was issued in Feb 2006, and it wasn't sorted out until April 2006.

In any case, employers are usually understanding about a NI number that's on the way.
