Many Mexicans have legitimate family in US. They're called Chicanos, or Mexican-Americans. If it's easier for Mexican nationals to cross our border 'illegally', they will continue to do it. Getting a visa can be an expensive process for them, and they may not want to wait.

Also prior to 1846, a large percentage of SouthWest USA was Mexican territory. Mexican-American War grew out of an American expansionist policy known as "Manifest Destiny" and Mexico's refusal to recognize Texas as a legitimate state . Mexico lost half of its territory in the war. Mexican families ended up within some of the new annexed US territories. In that sense, I don't think Mexicans are true foreigners here.

I don't see this new immigration bill changing much of anything here in USA. I would be very surprized it if did. A lot of companies would lose a big chunk of their workforce, especially in outdoor fields like construction, landscaping, fruit and vegetable harvesting, ect.

Besides, Mexicans aren't illegal until they're caught.

I doesn't bother me if someone can find a shortcut to get in here. I have the ways and means to work within the US immigration system. I prefer the legal system myself. I'm not much of a risk-taker either.

Dont know if any of you are watching so cal news at all and the illegal immigrant worker situation, the revolt and what have you. Spoke to a mexican friend of mine who had come to the US on a tourist visa with his family and never went back, worked illegally for god knows how long, applied for a green card and a got a 10 year one within about a month he said. This makes me so angry knowing i have a six month wait for a f****** fiance visa, then god knows how long to AOS.

Sorry,

I needed to let it out.

Besides, Mexicans aren't illegal until they're caught.

so is suicide... and any other type of activity that is deemed "against the law".

Either way you look at it. It's wrong.

The biggest problem in the whole debate is the us consulates abroad. they operate however they like with no accountability (consular officers decisions are final and unappealable) and like to play god. They say all the right things and pretend to look at paperwork and make 'decisions', but at the end of the day, they happily accept your $125 application fee and only quotas and memos decide who's in and who's not. And it creates all the so-called problems these people supposedly are. people know they have a 99.9% chance of not being granted a visa in their home country so thats where the stories that consulate officers love to quote when they berate foreigners. or else they just try to run across the border.

if people had a legitimate chance to get a visa, everyone would try to do it the right way. no one WANTS to be illegal, no one wants to risk their life running through a desert. Would you rather earn $2 an hour or minimum wage, pay taxes, pay SS, and have a chance for health coverage and other benefits you may be entitled to? Basically, companies love to have these workers and thats why its never been fixed before. Its just that sometimes fervor gets whipped up when people look around and see so many foreigners as if they have no right to be here. Just because you see a mexican walking down the street in LA doesn't mean he's illegal. Theres no law that says mexicans can't be here.

It's very frustrating when very illegal sorts get put ahead of others in the system, and we just have to sit and watch. It happened when my husband was dealing with the bureaucracy back home in Canada to get a new work permit and considered immigration as a skilled labourer; at the same time, several dozen migrants on boats from China showed up on the coast, were put into a (very nicely outfitted) detention center converted from a rather posh, minimum security jail and basically ushered through the refugee process. We suggested putting him in a rubber raft and floating him across the US border, claiming hardship for being a liberal and liking trees. :P

I think, honestly, the fellow you spoke to wasn't legitimate in his claim of a month.

Thats my point. Why are they committing marriage fraud? Its only the mexicans that have a chance to run across the border. You can't walk in from zimbabwe

I just dont understand it, its not like i am coming from a third world country and seeking asylum, the process is long and stupid and only filters the genuine people and not those who do it the wrong way. I mean Im from one of the financial capitals of the world and part of one of the worlds strongest past empire, yet i have to wait six months while millions of illegals now flood the borders and get to stay whilst filing for their papers. Its not fair.

PS: He may have been pulling my leg, but the facts still remain, i have known him for a year, and he is illegal (I have my sources) and he has been in the US for 8 years. So something wrong is happening their but i dont know what.

just to add my two cents as i am quite annoyed as to the nature of this post - i think that the story is obviously rubbish and plays upon people's fears and prejudices in an effort to whip up anti-immigrant sentiment at the very least....

at the same time and apologies as i do not intend to insult the character of the OP who obviously is a decent person trying to make sense of why he is caught up in a bureaucratic hell but rather express a pet peeve of mine- it greatly annoys me to think that because of a persons particular nationality they should feel privilaged over other and by implication less "worthy" nationalities. after all the empire referred to above was a key reason in the forced dispalacement to give one example, of millions of irish people - many of whom landed here in the US. i had thought/wished that this sense of imperialism was becoming a thing of the past so it frustrates to see it here and i feel forced to drag up history as i hold no grudges for past actions - if anything i sometimes abhor nationalism and its violent manifestations.

now if anything is unfair it is not the fact that there are illegal migrants but rather it is the reasons that they became illegal in the first instance - as in the case of Ireland it was to a great extent the historical consequnces of the famine and colonisation - perhaps in mexico this might be the impact of economic globalisation, a phenomenon no doubt integral to the success of your home city, which is by the way an inspiring model of how many different cultures can live together - so i just ask that we broaden this debate a little and realise that people migrate for reasons other than love as in the case of the majority of us here - we should also not forget the mark that mass emigration leaves on the home country - it is a scar ireland is only just coming to terms with - the same could be said about mexico in the future

now the way i see it is that if people are frustrated with the USCIS then they should complain about them to their representatives etc and not suggest that illegal migrants who aren't even in the system in the first place are the reason for USCIS's inefficiency. we are essentially talking about something that has not even begun and it will be interesting if it actually does begin to see how many such individuals will use this great community or will feel inclined to use a forum where they will not be villified.

sorry for the monday morning rant but for me being illegal is not that different from the process of becoming legal whcih as we all know sucks -

I feel terrible for anyone who has to spend his/her life on the run in order to make the lives of their families better by being an illegal immigrant. I mean, honestly, what does it hurt to habe illegal immigrants made legal if they've been here long enough, have genuine family ties here etc? It's not hurting any of us. It's not like they're taking tons of jobs away from USC... Honestly, most of the time the jobs that illegals get an American wouldn't do anyway. Think about it. They have it just as hard, if not harder than those who did it the right way. At least you don't have to spend your lives looking over your shoulder and worrying if tomorrow you're going to be deported back to a life where you have so little hope of anything better. If my husband and I hadn't had the money to do it legally, we would have found another way to be together. People shouldn't be judged for trying to make their lives better.

David & Erin [br]5962a06.jpg.png

6/19/2002- Met Online

11/10/2002- Met in person for the first time at Buffalo International Airport we spend a blissful but all too short week together.

2/23/03- David proposes on the beach in Melbourne Florida at sunrise during his second visit.

9/26/03- After much talk with USCIS we decide to go ahead and get married during David's third visit, with David planning on returning to Ireland the following week.

9/30/03- Phone USCIS to ask questions on filling out paper work and USCIS officer informs us that if David is already here he doesn't need to leave. After numerous calls to the Irish Embassy and two more calls to USCIS to confirm, we decide he will stay.

12/02/03- Petition for AOS recieved

10/8/04- EAD FINALLY arrives

11/10/2004- Our Son Colin Michael Kieran born two years to the minute after our first face to face meeting!

1/26/06- Recieved interview appointment letter.

3/09/06- AOS approved! David is a permanent resident with stamp in passport.

4/4/06- Green card arrives. We are now free to travel back to Ireland so David can see his family for the first time in more than two years.

Nothing worse than a immigrant who talks down about illegals......no matter what country you come from, if it was so good your spouse should have went their.

Sorry but I am not so organized:(.

I agree with pretty much everything you just said.

I've been wanting to say it myself for a while now in response to all the "anti-illegals" posts I've been reading lately on VisaJourney, but haven't had the energy to do so.

Bash if you will, but I don't see how any of us has the right to judge illegal immigrants. We do not know their particular reasonings or life-stories. Someone asked the other day the age old question, "If your family were starving, would you steal bread?"...and then had the nerve to answer no. Me? You bet your a$$ I would steal that bread. Family comes first and foremost. Always. If I were living in a country where I could not provide for my family, and had no way to legally move into a better situation, I would without a doubt do whatever it takes to give my family a better life. If that meant becoming an illegal immigrant, so be it. Love, help, take care of your family any way you can, even if it is illegal...or follow a set of rules put into place by the descendents of those who make these rules a complete hypocrisy in the first place? Which is the greater sin?

As was on the sign of a young Mexican girl marching in Orlando the other day, "We are ALL immigrants."
