Hoping jynx will see this...

I know the rules and regulations for getting a new passport from the U.S. but my question is, can I get a new passport when mine doesn't expire until 2011? I'm not changing my name or anything but my passport is becoming a bit of a problem because even though the photo on it is a year old, it doesn't look like me. I've had it scrutinised time and time again. It was a horrible photo to begin with but it's also WAY too dark (could it have been the scanner at the passport office because it looked "okay" in hardcopy). And my hair has grown a lot since then (it was just under my ears) AND I don't really wear makeup anymore or if I do, it's pretty light.

The lady at the SSA office commented it didn't look like me but the photo on my K3 in my passport does. The USCIS district office security guard commented it didn't look like me and the interviewer I could tell was thinking it until she flipped to my K3. People in stores when we buy booze sort of stare at it for awhile...

Think it'll be a problem to apply this early for a new one? I was thinking about sending it in about a month from now when I have my GC and my state ID in hand. Right now my passport is my only form of ID (well I have an EAD but want something a little more "common" for ID).

Another quick question re: the guarantor. I can get my USC husband to be my guarantor without a problem right? He's got his notary license or whatever it is and the seal.

Misa,

I..oops I mean "a friend" got a nose job and passport canada said that i oops i mean "she" could get a new passport if she wanted to but it was not necessary as "the pictures are always awful anyways". I wouldnt apply right now...it is taking several months to process applications ESPECIALLY from the US. About 4-5 months through mail even though its says 10 weeks on the website. If i was you, I would wait until I came back to canada to visit and apply in person. You can get a new one and show them proof of travel and it can be done within 2 weeks if you apply in person.

Hope this helps

Oh yes, I can get one now. We've just been lazy about it. I don't want to send them my passport until I have both my GC and state ID. At the rate we're going (being lazy about going to the DMV) it'll probably be another month before I get my ### down there. :P

Ohhh... I'd love to see your, I mean "friend's" before and after photos. ;) I guess it's not a huge deal right now. I think I'm just bored today because I haven't much to do so I keep thinking about "stuff" that needs to be done later. I should just get my state ID and stop being so damn lazy. Maybe I will indeed wait until I go back up to Canada, though not sure when that will be.

That long to get it ?

I'm about to send Andre's to the Jamaican embassy in NY to renew his. It looks to only take about 6 weeks. I am only renewing his because it is due to be renewed next year. Otherwise, we have had the darn thing in the safe deposit box at the bank since January of this year.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

Yeah right now there is a nice backlog for American and canadian passport due to that new law. Everybody must have a passport when flying Can-USA. And unfortunately a lot of people that don't need it and that will probably never travel are doing it just in case, causing a backlog for people that really needs it....

Yup! That long a wait. There's a HUGE backlog at Passport Canada because of the new regulations that were put in place regarding air travel between Canada and the U.S.

I'm still trying to decide whether I'm going to renew my passport in person or mail it out, as I have those persnickety family weddings to go to. Doing it in person may win out, since I'll be a nervous wreck about waiting for the damn thing. :P

:D I think you said it pretty well! I think people also applied because there's been talk about instituting the same policy (eventually, they keep changing the date I think) for land crossings. I did get my new passport last year before the big rush... too bad I didn't get a better photo that looks like me on it. Kind of tired hearing, "that doesn't look like you" from people. Yeah yeah, I know, just gotta get my a$$ in gear and get my state ID! :P
