We are discounting the MP office experience because it's from a Canadian's view, from inside - not actually as an American traveller(s), with (non-flag bearing) backpacks & all.

but in her experience she said that there were some Americans that were coming asking for Canadian stuff and when asked why they said it was because they were traveling abroad...

no one is saying it happens all the time but t happens on occasion...

I get that. They may have been jusy saying that - or they may not.

Both Robin & myself have travelled extensively as Yanks, lived abroad & have not seen it. That is what we are saying.

And the best tourists in the world are...

Wed May 23, 2007 9:49AM EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - The best tourists in the world are the Japanese, followed by Americans and the Swiss, a survey based on views from hoteliers across Europe said Wednesday.

Japanese tourists stood out for being polite and tidy, securing 35 percent more votes than the Americans who came second.

Swiss tourists were commended for being quiet and considerate, unlike the Britons who were judged to be the fifth worst tourists because of rude behavior, noise and a miserly attitude to tipping.

But despite their faults, hoteliers do look favorably upon British spending habits voting them the third biggest holiday spenders after Americans and Russians.

Based on responses from 15,000 European hoteliers, the survey carried out on behalf of travel Web site Expedia showed that the worst tourist nation was France, followed by India, China and Russia.

Britain was second in the worst-dressed tourist table which was headed by the Americans, and fifth in the least-generous table which was headed by the Germans.

Oh well...

My personal experience - you can choose to believe it or not, it really doesn't matter to me, nor does it change the fact that American tourists came into our office to obtain Canadian pins and decals to wear when they travelled overseas. Just because you didn't experience it doesn't make it false - there actually is a world outside of your experience as well. There are Americans who do and Americans who don't. As I said, you can discount my evidence if you wish - it really doesn't change the reality.

And just because you some Americans came in & told you 'their reason? Almost always that they were going overseas and knew that Canadians were better treated than Americans in many countries. Fact.'

That does not make it a fact. Have you ever travelled abroad & seen anyone with a Canadian flag pin on their lapel? Or a sticker on their luggage?

I think the links posted prove no one in Europe or elsewhere really cares about the difference between Canadians & Yanks. Canuks don't even rank on the best or worst travellers lists....so how could they be treated better or worse?

Actually, the posts that followed showed that there are individual Americans here in VJ who chose to do that . . . . as I said, your disbelief doesn't negate the reality. You may not have yourself nor 'knowingly' encountered anyone who has, however it doesn't change the fact that it happens.

You may find it somewhat enlightening to do a google search on '"Americans Travelling" "Canadian Pins"' and just see how many pages come up of Americans wearing Canadian identification while travelling overseas; in fact for a while there was a company selling "Canadian kits" to Americans for just that purpose (back in 2004).
