I never said she was illegal, i have no clue what her status is. she sure is a sweetie tho. my daughter, shonna, shes been sitting with her at lunch and in classes bc no one else will. its sad really. when teachers ask her a question she has no clue whats been asked, and it takes them half a day to find one person with enough spanish ability to speak with the girl

Not s ure if anyone asked this Tara (had trouble with the first couple pages) but doesn't this school have an ESOL teacher? Our school has a teacher specifically for immigrant children who speak little to no english.

this country has no national official language.................

This country has 50 mini-countries some of which do.

but brother MA, they are not official and recognized as such..and i venture more...on Indian reservations, allot of them speak their native tongue...

The US does have one official language, English.

LOL. Wrong. Guess again.

OK, possibly a slightly generalised point.....

What is the answer then?

From memory, a certain level of English is required to naturalise in the US...... but I don't think any other languages are required.

You do learn something new everyday........ from some quick research I see that:

'English Only legislation first appeared in 1981 as a constitutional English Language Amendment. This proposal, if approved by a two-thirds vote of the House and Senate and ratified by three-quarters of state legislatures, would have banned virtually all uses of languages other than English by federal, state, and local governments. But the measure has never come to a Congressional vote, even in committee.

Since 1981, 23 states have adopted various forms of Official English legislation, in addition to four that had already done so.'

BUT, as the question was related to a girl in florida, Florida does have an official language....... English.

FLORIDA CONSTITUTION,

ARTICLE II, SECTION 9 (1988)

(a) English is the official language of the state of Florida.

(B) The legislature shall have the power to enforce this section by appropriate legislation.

Which tallys with Mawilson's claim.

Just as a matter of fact, how were you imagining the post was going to develop?

It's obviously an uncomfortable time for the girl in question, but I'm not sure what a thread could ever have done to improve the situation.

I'd have thought there were a few caring compassionate humans on here, that might have seen or been through something similar who would maybe discuss ideas on ways to make alittle girl more comfortable and understood........

Guess I'm going to have to learn that things are different down there.

Ironically, I think you misunderstand my question. What positive and productive 'actions' have been raised during the course of the thread?
