Simple solution. Lets raise taxes and put ESL teachers in every school.

Or, cut the defence budget to a level that actually reflects the need and put ESL teachers in every school. Simple.

Just because we waste our defense dollars in a war of choice doesn't mean actual need is drastically less than what is currently allocated. Our domestic borders are porous and air and seaport security is lax to pathetic. There are better uses for the money.

Aren't we spending something like twice what the rest of the world combined spends? I agree that our priorities are out of whack, but it seems reasonable to suppose that actually getting them in whack would result in significant savings to the taxpayer.

Probably. I'm just cautioning against the common (these days) belief that just because Iraq is such a wasteful disaster, that our true defense needs must not be as great as previously thought. I believe they are as great, we still do live in a post 9/11 world, and just because GWB has cynically manipulated that fact doesn't make that bottom line fact any less true.

jmho.

Fair enough. I think the problem is more confusing 'offense' needs with 'defense' needs.

Do you all forget what America was founded upon? None of our forefathers spoke English! This is a land intended to welcome all hardworking, diligent people- a land of opportunity for a better life! Your great-grandparents didn't speak English!

Don't the thirteen stripes on the US flag represent the 13 British Colonies that existed the British were defeated during the revolutionary war? I think a great many of 'our' fore-fathers spoke English.....

As for the girl in the OP's particular case - The US does have one official language, English. It was (probably) the parent's decision to move to a country where their daughter could not speak it's official language. It is a sad situation for the girl as she would probably be happier on a short-term basis back in her home-land.

Re-reading my post (in passion when I typed)- OK so our forefathers did speak English- for god's sake they were British!

But my grandparents did not- Norway/Ireland/Germany.

Forgive my mistake in posting.

Opps - I replied to your first post, without reading your follow-up.....

The US does have one official language, English.

LOL. Wrong. Guess again.

Some states, such as California, have amended their constitutions to make English the only

official language. It doesn't mean that official government documents should be available

only in English, but it does mean that they should be available in English.
