You are very lucky (unlike many) to be able to afford English prep for your daughter. I imagine all parents wished they had this luxury.

I don't judge you- because I don't know you. We are virtual strangers on a visa website.

I can say, that I do not like your comments in the least, and I find deep hate embedded in them.

Perhaps I read incorrectly.

I am always open to conversation, and perhaps it is a better venue to clarify through PM'ing.

Sincerely,

Christine

She may be eleven, and it's got to suck being eleven and alone in middle school, but she's going to be better served going to school than learning English from her parents, as they're likely not certified English teachers. It sucks, and she'll have a lonely couple years, but I'd be willing to bet she'll be better off in the long run struggling through it than withdrawing until her English is good enough. (Like, that's what school is for. To teach people things.)

I suspect it will take significantly less than a couple of years... It would be interesting to hear an update come December, my guess is that the situation will be greatly different....

Yeah, probably. I meant more that by high school she probably won't even have an accent or be thought of as 'that Spanish girl.'

ESL education's worth it to me. I mean, long run, are we better off as a society wishing at the fairy pool that every new immigrant will teach their kids English, or actually providing the resources to teach the kids? You get better integration into the U.S. if you have a command of the language. Deny them that, and it's not like the kid is magically going to get English proficiency. And that just creates a permanent, immobile underclass that doesn't speak the same language as the people in charge. To me that sounds like a recipe for societal instability.

this thread is sad...........

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Simple solution. Lets raise taxes and put ESL teachers in every school.

Or, cut the defence budget to a level that actually reflects the need and put ESL teachers in every school. Simple.

Just because we waste our defense dollars in a war of choice doesn't mean actual need is drastically less than what is currently allocated. Our domestic borders are porous and air and seaport security is lax to pathetic. There are better uses for the money.

No need to go that far, even. All you need is an adequate number of ESL teachers; for some districts, like where I grew up, that might mean one instructor shared among the entire district.

Ease up on Ionescu, folks. I think she's wrong as a matter of public policy, but I'm not seeing hatred directed at the child in question or the parents.

Aren't we spending something like twice what the rest of the world combined spends? I agree that our priorities are out of whack, but it seems reasonable to suppose that actually getting them in whack would result in significant savings to the taxpayer.

Probably. I'm just cautioning against the common (these days) belief that just because Iraq is such a wasteful disaster, that our true defense needs must not be as great as previously thought. I believe they are as great, we still do live in a post 9/11 world, and just because GWB has cynically manipulated that fact doesn't make that bottom line fact any less true.

jmho.
