I imagine if Ionescu had said the girl was Chinese or Russian people wouldn't be freaking out.

No particular reason to assume the child is illegal (especially since I gather from the original post that Ionescu doesn't live in an area with a strong Hispanic community; if you just snuck in, would you move to an area where you stuck out like a sore thumb?) Lots of ways for a youngster who doesn't know the language to come here: maybe she's the daughter of someone's fiancee.

You got that right. I have no issue with people playing by the rules.

I do have a problem with someone illegally entering a country and then playing on the sympathy of others to get their child a free education.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Even worse Children of US citizens or legal residents suffer because the teachers are spending more time with the non english speaking children, so less time is s0pent on the class room and progress is slowed down.

Yes, God Forbid that teachers spend their time teaching the children who need it most.

All children who slow the class down need to be deported back to a country of the teachers choosing. That'll include a lot of white trash kids too. Good thing.

You seem to have a problem with white kids...

No, just stupid kids of white trash parents.

If you're wondering what white trash is, look in a mirror.

whoa..PWNED

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Either way illegal immigrants should be the issue as they are getting all of the attention in schools; in comparison to kids who speak other languages.

It's very good of your daughter to sit with her during lunch. The girl will probably pick up English pretty quick if the school has any kind of ESL at all, and just being around other kids and playing. Brains are pretty plastic at that age.A girl I went to eighth grade with immigrated from China at age 13. Two years later she was as American as anything (and her little brother had a crush on my little sister.)

The hate and animosity on this thread is sickening.

We are talking about a child who can't speak English, and who is embarrassed and afraid.

My SO is moving here in 4 weeks, and his English is terrible. God forbid he brings a child with him who only speaks Turkish. What do you suggest we do- keep our child at home until he/she learns English?

Do you all forget what America was founded upon? None of our forefathers spoke English! This is a land intended to welcome all hardworking, diligent people- a land of opportunity for a better life! Your great-grandparents didn't speak English!

This child, as hundreds of others will learn English with immersion and ESL. For those of you who complain that she is holding others back in class- that is not the case. We teachers grade new learners of English with pass/fail, and do not hold other students back in the process. Actually, struggling (natual born-English speaking students) in my classes gain a sense of empowerment in tutoring and helping non-native speakers.

I am disgusted by the hateful rhetoric here.

Re-reading my post (in passion when I typed)- OK so our forefathers did speak English- for god's sake they were British!

But my grandparents did not- Norway/Ireland/Germany.

Forgive my mistake in posting.

this is the 6th grade, no speak english, then your completely LOST!!! in my opinion its best to learn basic enligh before throwing a child into a school of ALL english. My husbands brother is 3, and we are looking to adopt him, we refuse to put him in school until he knows english, god forbid, learning english first is worse than the cruelty of kids and the embasrassment of knowing NOTHING of whats going on.

No I did not label a little girl anything but discussed the issue of the massive drain from non-English speaking students on the school system.
