My daughter started middle school last week. she came home and told me about this mexican girl in her class who doesnt know ANY english. She was telling me how shy and embarassed the poor girl is and it broke my heart. its hard enough to be in a new school where no one knows you, but why the HELL would any parent not teach them or have them learn from somewhere the language in which they will be learning in??? its sad, and its hurting her more doing this than not having her at home and teaching her in their own language.

Perhaps they are new to America. Perhaps they can't afford an English tutor just yet, or the parents don't speak English.

I am a teacher at a suburban high school, and it is not uncommon to have 2 or 3 students every year who have never had any exposure to English.

Immersion is the best way to learn, as is a strong ESL program. I've seen students become fluent within a year.

That is a major problem and concern in areas with illegal immigrant populations, The parents do not know the English Language & they send their children to public schools ( of which they do not contribute any funding to) and expect these public schools to spend more resources, time and money on these Children of Illegal Aliens, all the while these Innocent Children are embarrased and do not excel in their education it filters into thier secondary education and eventually their career options will be limited, they will not be able to land a skilled job or trade and will not be able to afford housing or Medical insuranace and the cycle continues.

Even worse Children of US citizens or legal residents suffer because the teachers are spending more time with the non english speaking children, so less time is spent on the class room and progress is slowed down. Teachers are working harder and the class progress suffers,

One more reason why there needs to be a CRACK down & Enforcement of Immigration laws.

When the children are suffering because of their criminal parents refuse to follow the laws, provide their children with the proper resources and put the burden on USA LEGAL residents and tax payers.

Illegal Criminal Aliens Should NOT be given any special treatment or leniancy, neither should their children.

Baker (1993) has found that more than one thousand studies have been completed on immersion programs and immersion language learners in Canada. These studies have given us a wealth of information. Across these studies, a number of important observations can be found.

* Early immersion students lag behind their monolingual peers in literacy (reading, spelling, and punctuation) for the first few years only. However, after the first few years, the immersion students catch up with their peers.

* Immersion programs have no negative effects on spoken skills in the first language.

* Early immersion students acquire almost-native-like proficiency in passive skills' (listening and reading) comprehension of the second language by the age of 11.

* Early immersion students are more successful in listening and reading proficiency than partial and late immersion students.

* Immersion programs have no negative effects on the cognitive development of the students.

* Monolingual peers perform better in sciences and math at an early age, however immersion students eventually catch up with, and in some cases, outperform their monolingual peers.

Yes, God Forbid that teachers spend their time teaching the children who need it most.

All children who slow the class down need to be deported back to a country of the teachers choosing. That'll include a lot of white trash kids too. Good thing.

I never said she was illegal, i have no clue what her status is. she sure is a sweetie tho. my daughter, shonna, shes been sitting with her at lunch and in classes bc no one else will. its sad really. when teachers ask her a question she has no clue whats been asked, and it takes them half a day to find one person with enough spanish ability to speak with the girl

Exactly my thought... My wife came here in May and we have worked hard all summer in order to get her son somewhat conversant in English (which with the help of close to 4 hrs a day of structured lessons and the television he is almost there)... Anyways, if they had not arrived in May but today (1 week before start of school) the situation would be totally different.....

YMMV

similar story in the free lunch post. Parents make bad decisions yet everyone else has to pay for it; In terms of both time and money. A lot of counties are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to cater for Spanish speaking kids. Money that is probably being taken away from other kids. Taken away from the same kids whose parent's probably contribute the most in terms of tax might I add.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

You seem to have a problem with white kids...

BTW, who said this girl was illegal?

nobody it was a sweeping generalization

And a warranted one. How many non-English speaking kids in the US would you think are from illegal immigrant parents??
