Using a fiance visit to move personal belongings

My US fiance is soon coming to England because it is too long to be apart from each other and since her stay is going to be pretty short her luggage will be light. We had the idea that on the way back she could take my suitcase (which she would be allowed) and use it to take some of my personal belongings back so it will cost less when I move over.

My personal longings are not that much really and I would not be taking over any electronic equipment for compatibility reasons so it would just be things like keepsakes, books, dvds, maybe a few clothes etc.

Has anyone else used this as a method and what did you take? Did you run into any problems at customs?

Thanks :)

There would be zero problems with this.

I wish I'd thought of that last time I was visiting! No, but when my fiance was here last time, he did stuff his suitcase full of personal belongings and leave them with me and had no issues at either Heathrow or O'Hare. Heck, he even smuggled me some Tesco's yoghurt and nobody noticed. :)

It's not a problem at all, When i went to India, I almost went with just basic stuff that i need, that way my fiancee had an extra bag to put stuff.

Not only did we do that, but hubster's parents have come for visits since he's been here and they loaded up on his belongings with no problems from customs. On the first trip they brought over about 150 CD's.

I agree. No issues for us either. I left most of my stuff with Andre on early visits. Later, I brought empty suitcases with me and filled them with his stuff on return.

The only problem would be if the luggage were over-weight, you would have to pay extra

Just a word of caution for someone coming to visit in the States, bringing a suitcase full of personal belongings, such as pictures could cause problems.

I know someone who had tried to bring some photo albums of her kids, back with her to the States, and she was turned back....they said it they didn't believe she was going back to Canada (which she wasn't planning on doing)

she did manage to get back to Fort Drum, she brought the pics back to her parents and tried again the next day.

Long story, but she had married a guy in Fort Drum, so um yeah, she wasn't really allowed back to Canada, then back to the States anyway....

I did this for my then fiancé. I came back with stuff in my suitcase for him and on previous visits he did leave a few things with me. He also started shipping small boxes of stuff over the course of time it took the petition to process and visa approved. By doing this he had just a few things to bring with him. His parents then shipped the rest of his things a week or so later. This is our experience, yours may be different. :)

No worries at all. I just returned from the UK with a suitcase (his) full of pictures, CD's and other personal items. As long as you're not over the 50# weight limit, you're fine. It's a great idea and saves time and hassles later on. It was also nice in my case to feel that there is a part of him now in my house. Good luck!

Hah, my husband and I have been doing that since last Christmas! Slowly but surely we're moving all his books, clothes, etc, over here. He brings extra stuff with him when he visits and I take extra stuff with me when I visit him :) Hopefully we'll have whittled it down enough :)
