If someone asks me about something they are wearing and it doesn't look good, I don't say "You look fine in that." Neither do I say "OMG, you look sooo FAT in that." I will usually say something like "why don't you wear that black skirt with the lace, that makes you look really good."

At least, that's what I say to my mom. My SO looks great in EVERYTHING (or nothing)

Conversely, if I asked the same question, I'd expect honesty. I'd be really pizzed off otherwise....him lettin me go out lookin like shiznit.
