David and I went to look at a horse farm today... 18.5 acres, 2500 sq ft house, with barns, pastures, etc. He'd sent the listing to his brother in the UK and his brother said that there was no way they could even find a cheap house for the price they're asking for this farm.... cost of living differences have always interested me.

8-30-05 Met David at a restaurant in Germany

3-28-06 David 'officially' proposed

4-26-06 I-129F mailed

9-25-06 Interview: APPROVED!

10-16-06 Flt to US, POE Detroit

11-5-06 Married

7-2-07 Green card received

9-12-08 Filed for divorce

12-5-08 Court hearing - divorce final

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

I can't wait to buy our first house though we will prolly have to rent first until I get myself a job - it is going to be so good though! As I have only just finished uni I am still living at home so it is going to be so exciting to have our own space and the houses we can buy (even in SoCal) are so much more affordable than over here. We can realistically get a 4 bed house and pay the mortgage and bills on my fiance's income alone.

We won't need that much space at first but it will be useful for when people come to stay and we have kids :D Ooooh - I just wish we already had it so I could plan the decor and the garden and...

Hehe, you sound just like me Jeraly. I have never lived in a place of my own and I can't wait to get a little place for Josh and I. We'll probably rent for a year or 2, to get my credit score started off and get a nice deposit saved, then we're aiming to buy a 3 bedroom place of our own :)

I've never really understood why people feel the need to live in huge house with acres of lawn so they spend every weekend sitting on a mower. But maybe that is just me. There are only two of us. We don't need a lot of room. I do a lot of work from home and it still doesn't get cramped. Heating a large home over a Vermont winter is a nightmare. The bills are bad enough as it is. I think our house is about 1200 square feet and it's plenty big. When it comes to cleaning, I wish it was flippin smaller!

Talking of little things that make you think: I have lived here 3+ years and we never lock the car doors, or the house. On Friday someone stole a stash of parking meter money from the car. It couldn't have been more than $4. What made me think was even after living in London most of my life (30+ years) I had never been a victim of crime, and now in sleepy Vermont I was...albeit a small one. I was more gutted about the cute purse they stole than the cash, of course.

Give me a postage-stamp size yard anyday. As long as it's got some room around the edges for flowers. Now THAT is something I still enjoy.

I agree, if it is large it needs to be mowed. That's hard work - especially in the Summer. Phew.

The differences in what you get for your money with regards to property still amazes me. We were recently back in the UK visiting my family and when I told people that our new house (2300sq ft, 3 bed, double garage, finished basement with bar) cost the equivalent of around 90k pounds, they almost fell over. My sister lives in a 1 bed flat in Watford, Hertfordshire and she paid 115k pounds. I recently read an article that said that some areas of London (eg. Knightsbridge) now have the most expensive real estate in the world. Some properties are selling for 2000GBP per sq ft !! At those prices, our house would be around $10 Million !! We don't have a huge yard but it's certainly a workout to mow when it's 100 degrees outside !!

Mark :)
