Hello all!

Well, Ewen will be here in less than 2 weeks now :D, and he was wondering what kind of Customs declaration he'll have to make. All he's bringing is personal stuff--clothes, laptop, DVDs and CDs, pictures, stuff like that. How should he answer the questions about what he's bringing in (other than the obvious ones about alcohol and plants)?

Thanks! :)

When I came over I put an estimated cost of my goods in that box as I wasn't too sure what to fill in. I explained this to the POE guy, saying I wasn't too sure how much my stuff was worth. He asked me if I had anything of retail purposes that would generate money, I told him it was all personal and he crossed everything out on my form.

In a long wafflely way, you don't need to put anything in there because its all personal items!

If you actually want to bring in gold bullion, there's a well-established way to do it (desis particularly use it to bring gold to India, where the local gold price is higher than the world one): go to a jeweller (in UK and US, desi jewellers are hardly rare) and have some atrocious jewelery made (usually bangles, which a woman brazens through). For a guy coming to US, this can be accomplished by doing a "Mr. T wannabe" and wearing it (Mr. T was/is known to sport somewhere near half his body weight in jewelery) through.

At that point, "used personal effects -- 0" works just fine.
