Yes Charles, let's. Hows about you coming to volunteer for a week or so at my school.

Charles, are you listening?

I've BEEN a school volunteer. You would not believe what I have seen.

And our family qualified for free lunches at one point also. Because of a change in family circumstance.

Don't anybody go there with me about how the FEW little things our government does to support families are a drain on this nation.

If you as a government can take my son off to war, then you can damn bloody well feed him if we fall upon hard times.

i'll try to fit that into my busy schedule while working 40-91 hours a week ;)

Illegals are smart enough to cross our borders and take advantage of our free government programs like free lunches for the kids not fair to the kids here who really needs free lunch programs lol. Funny how illegals they can afford nice big houses and drive big SUVs lol.

Just don't lump the kids in there with your statement. Those kids aren't given the choice to be illegals. I don't know of any illegals in my area that drive the big SUV's you mention, nor do they own big nice houses such as you mention. All kids who meet the income criteria are given free lunches...illegals or not. NOT ONE CHILD is denied this benefit...regardless of who they are or where they come from.

And this is the way it should be

maybe she does her own nails or has a friend who does them for her .. same with the hair...

Yeah right, and the set of wheels with the top-of-the-line stereo was home-made, too. You know what I'm talking about. You've seen it. Don't sit there and tell me that you haven't.

I dunno, Big Dog. I don't think that being on public assistance means that you have to subject all of your spending to scrutiny by other people who are tsk-tsking. Maybe a friend works for a nail salon and she gets them done for free. Maybe she works for the nail salon herself. Maybe she doesn't make enough money at her job to pay for all of the groceries but has $20 left over to treat herself once a month.

ok.... yes there are families that take advantage of this program and or the system but there are families who genuinely need a helping hand.... we can't lump them all together...

and the kids shouldn't have to suffer because of it...

Until you do, it's hard to make a judgment like yours. I would invite anyone else to come volunteer. It will definitely change your mind...and open your heart.

BTW Charles, teachers put in more hours than they actually get paid for too. You're not alone in that corner. ;)

no one is denying that people take advantage of the system but you can't lump everyone together that uses food stamps or people who's kids get the free meals

And good for you for having that job where you have the opportunity to make that kind of money. Not all of America is that fortunate.

For whatever it's worth, I did my volunteer time while my ex-husband was working 40-91 hours per week - which directly contributed to our divorce - which directly contributed to MY new household being eligible for free lunch.

###### has a way of happening Charles.

Means-tested benefit means just that, though. I don't agree with people living large on my expense. When there are shiny Lexus' parked in subsidized housing complexes then something ain't right. Because the taxpayer helps funding those at the end of the day. That just stinks.

and at the same time, i'm working to help pay for all of that. so if i took off for a week to go to a school as you suggested, i'd not be paying my taxes due to no work and therefore stealing food from the kiddos, eh?

*sarcastic remarks ahead*

The audacity of the poor wanting to actually treat themselves. GASP! What ARE they thinking! They're poor, they need to LOOK poor!

Yes Reinhard, I do know what you're talking about...we've all seen it. But do you REALLY REALLY know the circumstances behind each and every little detail you're noticing? REALLY? Oh I know there are many who do just what you state. Yeah, it does make one angry. Pizzed off. But there are some who don't abuse the system yet they get judged if their hair looks "too good for someone on assistance", or her nails are done "too good for someone on assistance". Maybe the father is wearing something "too good for someone on assistance" to be wearing. LOL, I've found Tommy Hilfiger and LL Bean at thrift stores! Neiman Marcus too!

What if you were in circumstances beyond your control. Financially I mean. Someone offered Nani a free nail job. Or offered you something of equal value. Would you take it? How would you feel if someone judged you because of it?

Back to the discussion...the kids STILL shouldn't have to suffer because of whatever perceived ill gotten assistance they may have. For god's sake..these are children.
