I'm sure there are freeloaders, but this program doesn't only effect lazy people. What happens to a hard working family involved in a serious auto accident or a family stricken by a serious illness? They lose thier earning power. Slowly thier savings become depleted. Insurance only pays so much.

SO true SHITE happens. Always hoping something might happen to those politicians or other holier then thou's families and see how fast things will change (nursing homes, schools, etc.)

And in answer to the original post YES, it should be continued!!

Kids need food for their brains to function properly, otherwise they won't retain anything and won't be able to become something GREAT!!!

This program is for THE CHILDREN for god's sake! These kids aren't the freeloaders nor are they lazy! They cannot help that their parent(s) can't or won't provide for them properly. And I'm sure there are just as many families stricken by illness or other life changing events that cause major financial setbacks. Regardless of the situation...why would anyone want to deliberately deny ANY child a free meal PERIOD???

i just wanted to add that just because these kids are getting these free or low cost lunches doesn't necessarily mean their parents are not properly taking care of their kids (i am sure there are parents that aren't) but maybe they aren't making enough money to give their kids proper meals etc...

You're right Marilyn. However the thought processes on this thread tend to lean towards lazy freeloaders and their kids. There are lots of hardworking families that just don't make enough money. When you work in the school system, you get to know who those parents are. My whole point is why would anyone in their right mind want to willingly deny a child a free meal at school?

Illegals are smart enough to cross our borders and take advantage of our free government programs like free lunches for the kids not fair to the kids here who really needs free lunch programs lol. Funny how illegals they can afford nice big houses and drive big SUVs lol.

Just don't lump the kids in there with your statement. Those kids aren't given the choice to be illegals. I don't know of any illegals in my area that drive the big SUV's you mention, nor do they own big nice houses such as you mention. All kids who meet the income criteria are given free lunches...illegals or not. NOT ONE CHILD is denied this benefit...regardless of who they are or where they come from.

Its all about "What can I get for free" Most of the kids I see in line at my kids school are pretty "fat-n-happy" they arent lookin to starved to me.

Actually, junk food (i.e. chips, corn dogs etc) is cheap to buy. I know quite a few children that have grown up FAT from eating this stuff because it was the ONLY thing their parents could afford. Being a fat child is not equivalent in any way to being healthy and well fed.

A diet of fresh fruit and vegetables is more expensive to buy than junk food, hence the expanding waist lines of the poor.

They can feed them in the summer but not during the school year?

Who is to say that they can feed their kids during the summer?

Again, my son has a friend who lives just round the corner. He is a little on the overweight side. Do you know what he eats all summer? Chips. I feel so bloody sorry for him that I would invite him over for dinner as often as I could and get a good, properly COOKED meal inside of him.

His parents aren't free loaders btw, they work hard, it's just that the have very little money to spare.

we have been over this a couple of times already...... sometimes stuff happens that is beyond a person's control and they might need some help....

yes we have. whereas that about something happening out of someone's control and might need help isn't what the free lunch program is basically about. it's subsidizing families that in general, don't need to be having a basketball or football team's worth of kids.

oh ... I get it ....

free condoms are cheaper than free lunches

along with birth control pills.

so most of the kids in the program come from big families? .... isn't that generalizing it a bit?... I am sure there are kids from all sorts of circumstances involved in the program...

sometimes a parent has to work 2 jobs just to keep a roof over their heads... don't they deserve a little break?..
