First of all, pls spare me the incorrect lesson in ecomonics....I have a business degree.

Secondly, I don't think I ever addressed the question of school lunches as a whole...what I did was address what *I* see as abuse of the system.

Your response here has nothing to do with what you and I have been talking about...we're talking about subsidizing children's meals while the parents 'treat' themselves. It is not ok for the parent to spend her last $20 on nails when we're payin for her kids because she *might* do something stupid. I don't need to know you to say that I see that as an 'excusing mentality'.

1) Business degree? Incorrectness?.. You must be joking  Have you missed those simple graphs of supply/demand/price determination and where they all meet? And how to get more profit than this graph allows? Ever been to TJ Maxx and seen what they sell there and what price? Seen student fares at the cinema?...

2) Why didn't you? That's what this topic is about.

3) Did you miss all those smiley faces in my posts? I was joking. Not excusing. But since you fail to see BOTH sides of the argument, I have to present the one side you do not see.

It may be not OK for a parent to spend the last $20 on herself. In your opinion. Obviously it is okay in hers, otherwise she would not be doing this. But you can't control her and hopefully you can't have hungry children at school? Because what tax you pay to provide food for them is a small price for keeping that child from breaking into your house for food, or growing up unhealthy to drive health insurance costs through the roof, or growing up bitter to bully your child at school, or growing up unhealthy and unready to protect you in some future war. Those kids from poor families often go to the army, you know.

Assuming its means-tested - what's the problem?

What do you means by means tested?

Usually means that receiving the benefit (in part or its entirety) is contingent on household net income. That's not a new idea BTW.

Here is even better idea - just don't pay the US tax.

There must be a way. Paid-all-cash? Move to another country? Some off-shore scheme? Somethin' will work.

Well, of course then you can make donations to any programs you like. Nobody can stop you. Full freedom, it rules!

I know full well that assistance programs are being abused. My cousin had a baby a year back and the father wanted nothing to do with the child. A few months later he called requesting that she send him a copy of the baby's birth certificate so he could get a low income apartment. #######? It's people like that who are abusing the system and ruining it for the people who actually NEED it.

I think it's pitiful, though, that people would want to make free/reduced meals unavailable for the children who need it just because some are abusing it. I mentioned earlier that my county has free lunch available for children throughout the summer. I'm sure there are some people who bring their kids there that don't actually need to since they could probably afford to buy the children's lunch themselves, but I think feeding their children is a small price to pay in order to reach those that actually need it. I don't want any child to go hungry just so we can save a few dollars in our taxes.

Im working in my community to eliminate the program.

Then you are an ###...good luck with that one buddy.

No kidding - he wants to do away with the program for no discernable, tangible reason whatsover, other than that he doesn't like people being 'dependent' and wants to teach them a lesson. Has little / no impact on his daily life / quality of life. Pretty evil IMO.

I wonder how he'd react if someone were to suggest doing away with his tax refund for no other reason than that he's lived quite comfortably all year without it and so therefore won't miss it. I think not...

Because you know what a GOOD mother will do to feed her child? With no other means possible, armed robbery and murder. Anything.

 A good mother will do nothing of the sort.

How come some people are more outraged with the chance that some loser parent might possibly abuse the reduced lunch program for their children to save maybe $20 a week, than the amount of corporate abuses in taking advantage of gov't subsidies which cost the American tax payers BILLIONS of dollars?

Why is it that the powerless in society are more scrutinized this way than the powerful? When people worry about fairness and abuse they should consider who they are talking about, the powerful or the powerless.

TJ and the like don't get those items at the same time the 'regular' stores do...so there's not the same value to the items as they are 'last season's _________' And how much of it is damaged gear. So it's not the same value to the item. But the most important bit is TJ isn't supplied with the same gear out of the goodness of the companies' hearts...it's about minimizing losses at that point. Maximizing space and recouping a few pennies on the dollar...when added up amts to a lot. They're losses at that point because they didn't sell at the expected price.

Sales and discounts ie 'student/sr citizen' fares are marketing ploys to increase revenue. Which is not neccessarily based on NEED or what one can pay. Hell, there's a store here that gives a 50 and older discount on Fri and a 49 and younger on Monday.

Either case, this dynamic has nowt to do with this conversation really.

2) Why didn't you? That's what this topic is about.

Why didn't I what?

3) Did you miss all those smiley faces in my posts? I was joking. Not excusing. But since you fail to see BOTH sides of the argument, I have to present the one side you do not see.

It's a bollox side. And the funny thing is you MAY have been joking, but there are those who can plausibly agree with what you say. So since you said it, I commented.

I do have to wonder how you can say you're putting forth a legitimate alt pov at the same time distancing it by disowning it due to 'smileys' and 'oh I was joking'. Pick a side. Stay there.

It may be not OK for a parent to spend the last $20 on herself. In your opinion. Obviously it is okay in hers, otherwise she would not be doing this. The way you make it sound sounds like paying protection money to the mob....'feed me or I'll bully your kid'

Nowhere did I say that there shouldn't be free lunch programs. And I see value in helping someone just to help them...not because 'oh if I don't they're going to affect ME'. What I've been addressing today is the abuse of the system. The problem is the mentality of 'oh I need a reward' and spending your last on things like nail art. Wanting to pay for your acrylic fill with WIC. And no, there's NO legitimate reason for anyone on any assistance to have acrylic nails. That kind of 'reward' mentality is what's going to keep them in financial dire straits.

There is no way of regulating people's spending while they are on welfare though, and there shouldn't be either in a free society. That people make what you/I might consider odd or stupid choices should come as no suprise to anyone, nor should it raise anyone's blood pressure unduly. Maybe it is possible to tighten up the rules and direct the funding more accurately. Usually, the cost of doing this offsets any savings that might be made by cutting out the offenders from the system.

These things are imperfect, but as has been stated, the programme is helping people(children) who would otherwise suffer much more hardship and is therefore worth preserving.

ITA cept for the bit in red. Well, I'm not sayin it really has raised my bp...only that I find abusing the system like that to be quite upsetting.

Anyways, dinnertime!

Im working in my community to eliminate the program.

You must be so proud of yourself that you want take a meal, perhaps the only hot meal they will receive that day, from a child. What kind of person are you? Are you even human? I'm sure there are some people who take advantage of it, but there are some people who really need it. You say you shouldn't have to pay for other people's kids, but are you so insensitive that you would begrudge a child? It's so easy for you to say that you are working to eliminate the program in your community, after all, you wouldn't be the one to tell a child...I'm sorry, but because your parents can't afford to pay for your lunch, you aren't going to be able to have it.

Something was also said about about overweight children. On average, children in the lowest income group are the ones who have the highest fat content on their bodies. It is because they are fed junk for the most part at home because...as we all know....junk food is cheap. It costs a lot more to buy healthy foods. Money that either the parents don't have...or in a lot of cases the parents aren't willing to spend on their children.

I am tired of children being the ones who are sh*t on day after day by adults who are supposed to take care of them. So sit there and be proud of yourself for stating this, after all, you won't really be the one who pays for it.

Bleeding heart? What have you done lately? Feeling sorry doesnt fill a stomach.

What have I done lately? I wish I could say I had the time and money it would take to make a big difference but the simple fact is that I don't. I do what I can here and there but I am fully aware it doesn't make much difference. However, I can state what I don't do. I don't proudly state that I am trying to eliminate a program in my community that supplies free lunches to children at school. That statement out of you completely disgusted me. I don't know what kind of experiences you had growing up as a child, but I am sure, because of your statement, that you have no idea what it is like for some of these children. I work my *** off everyday to make sure that my son does not have to grow up with the same circumstances that I did. And yeah, I guess I do have a bleeding heart b/c I do know what it's like and how it makes you feel.
